Glassy water advice pleeze...

Lippy Along that same line... I'm so used to landing at "my own risk" according to the tower here in Bozeman that I wouldn't know what to do if I landed at the towers risk.

Interesting reading.

I agree, if you don't have a VSI you can do glassy water landings quite safely.

However if you do have a VSI it is a very good quick reference for rate of descent.

And there are sea planes where I would be quite uncomfortable without a VSI to confirm my rate of descent in a situation where there was no shore line near enough for a cross reference.

By the way when practicing IFR landings, we quite often land with reference to instruments to touch down on the runway.....just another glassy water aproach and landing.....but you need two crew to safely do that. :)
