General C180 questions.

Thanks guys. I threw that question out hoping someone had done this before and would say I used xxxx and the job came back as if it were original 1974.

I was flying along yesterday looking at the breakers and realise there is not a lot of real estate between the breakers and the lip, or kick out at the bottom. I'm thinking I will have to go a pealing flexible sticker type label.

G'day to all. I think I'm going around in circles.

My door handle with the inner spline striped out. I bought another very expensive one off Cessna which has the inner spline which has been machined separately and I'm guessing epoxied in.
But it's not a good fit to the splined shaft coming out the door.

I'm thinking of redoing the splined shaft out of the door to be an exact match for the new handle.

But looking at the IPC I cannot find a part number for this part.

Am I missing something? (I feel like I've been able to locate this before but have been going around in circles the last few days on said door shaft/spline)

Thanks, Texmex.

Look on facebook "cessna 180/185" group.
Several threads there as I recall, p/n's cited for an old Ford handle which fits.
But might not be according to hoyle.

... I would like the sticker, or engraved plastic etc to be the same brown as the surrounds. What's the go to labelling company???

They sell small electronic label makers these days, with multiple size & font lettering.
You pick the tape you want-- there are multiple widths & colors.
Clear tape with white letters is what I'd suggest......

I used clear tape with black letters on mine.
but needed to scrub off the original factory white lettering with scotchbrite first.

What is going on over there? I refuse to have an account w/ POS Zuckerberg and the Skywagon group last year starting requiring log in.

There's a "Cessna 180/185" group as well as a "Cessna 180/185 Skywagon" group.
I go on both, but the first is my go-to.
As far as logging in, I guess it's a members-only private group?
As a member, it apparently automatically logs me in.
If you're boycotting FB membership, I guess you won't have access.

These work.

Thanks Wingwrench. I've got the handles. OEM no less at an arm and leg. I wanted it to look the part for a '74 model.

As for FB. No I don't do it, but my wife does plenty enough. I had trouble navigating it so no joy.

This is my door;

And this is an internet pic of what I think I want to recreate. Now the new plastics might be the problem, but rather than muck about with those on both sides I think I'll cut an other spline. But about 1/8" longer so the door handle sits nicely against the trim.

Has anyone played around with this shaft/spline? God forbid, does anyone have one that I can borrow.

I'm trying to avoid having my aircraft out of the air while I muck about with this. But I guess that'll be my path.

Any Pireps on replacing this spline?

Cheers.
Texmex.

And is Randy still the go to guy for a C180 Airbox?

He did my Cub years ago, and did a bloody good job on it.

Pirep: For other C180 airboxes, Randy (or Logan) only does Piper airboxes. Logan did give me the name of Joe Rogg for Cessna airboxes.

But I also was given details of someone in Australia (a lot closer to me) so I sent it there.
I'm yet to hear its fate, but in packaging it up and looking at it I felt it wasn't rebuildable.

So I'm looking at options.
Any reports on the Air Plains PMA'd airbox?

I saw a new PMA'd Acorn airbox in person at the NW Aviation show in WA last year,
it was absolutely beautiful.
They don't make one that fits the 1953-55 180's like mine, but that's ok--
at $5400 I couldn't afford one anyway.
Luckily mine just needed a shaft & bearings.

I dealt with Air Plains last year for some airbox parts and was well satisfied. The parts were better than the originals and I would have purchased the airbox rather than repair my old one but they were out of stock at the time. I recommend them.
