It used to fly in and out of here, KFQD, and then they said they were buying a new one from Cub Crafters and this one, a 65 PA-18-150, would be auctioned. I remember it because it was ragged out and had high hours. 15000 plus hours flying around these mountains catching poochers.

Welp, it sold on the 12th for, no, I can't say it yet, it hurts too much. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. An acquaintance with a Decathlon bid $1800 on it and thought he had a chance.

I went over to KMRN to look at it, figured it would bring 15 to 20. Awful rough. The O-320 engine had over 2k hours and the A&P said the filter made a cupful of metal last time they checked it. It was really raggedy, so we figured 15, maybe 20, and I refused to bid, mostly because of all the rust on the steel parts and the awful fabric and paint. It's a project, and a ratty and rusty one at that.

It brought 35. Unbelievable. Over at KMRN today they were all laughing and shaking their heads.

That is unbelievable especially considering you could by a completely brand new airframe (fuse, wings, surfaces, gear etc) for the same money in the form of a Dakota Cub kit. All certified parts too (the Dakota kit I mean). Unless you absolutely have to have a certified cub - buying a project is a waste of money from where I sit.

I looked at a 1955 cub in Glasgow Mt acouple of months ago. The cub sat outside fabric just about gone fuel leak inside cockpit, rats nests everywhere cowling bent and needed replacement boot cowl damaged and needing replacement, wings had obvious damage maybe wing spar broken or cracked tires weather checked etc, etc.
I offered the guy 20k as is,he said his wife had heard that cubs were bringing lots of money and she wouldn't take anything under 70k.
I think we cub owners do ourselves a disservice when we tell people how much fun there is in owning a cub.
