Engine shipping

Who has shipped an aircraft engine lately? I need to get my engine shipped up to Alaska from the lower 48. The couple of quotes I have already received has me thinking it would be cheaper to drive down and get it myself. I would like to stay away from Seattle and the barge. I have not had good luck going that route. Those guys just don’t seem to care. The FedEx quote I received was over $6k. Any ideas from anyone? Obviously top priority is getting my engine up here safe and sound.

I'll be watching this one eagerly! I had a complete experimental Cub kit shipped to me in Australia a few months ago and need to have an engine shipped from Canada to Australia in a few months time! 6k - ouch :(

For $6K come down and get it yourself........ where are you in Alaska? Is your engine in Seattle? If it is, I would pick it up and bring it to you for $5k if you are some place reasonable.

I shipped a radial engine (600 pounds) from Montana to Oklahoma and back. $1000 each way. It would have been a lot more if the engine shop had not sent me a bill of lading. Frequent shippers have special arrangements with the major shipping companies.

Couple months ago I had a pallet (101"x51"x12" 749 pounds) sent up from Tacoma to Anchorage for $220 including insurance. That leg was done by Carlile My Connect. The leg from the factory, 1.5 hour drive, was $300 ish(can't recall the carrier). It arrived in perfect condition.

There are broker sites where you input the info and you sit back and watch 100s of quotes hit your inbox. The one i tried was kind of sketch, I was getting quotes from $550 to over $6000 just to transport to Tacoma. Ended up going with a local guy the factory knew.

Just wanted to update with the direction I went and experience on shipping my engine. I ended up going with Lynden Transport. I asked for truck shipping all the way from OKC to Fairbanks. Everything was way smoother than I anticipated and the engine showed up without any damage to the packaging at all. All total it ended up costing me $1100. I highly recommend Lynden.

ive used fastenal twice from alaska to the lower 48, went perfect was a few years ago but about 250 bucks then. pre-lunacy. had to drive 60 miles to there nearest store but no biggy.

Call Alaska Air, they actually have been good for freight shipping at times.
I wanted to use AK Airlines, but you have to become a known shipper. Has something to do with people and cargo on the same plane. TSA does not make it easy to become a known shipper. Probably better for a business because they want to do a site visit, in my case, my home. Would have been way cheaper and faster to go that route, just not worth the headache in my opinion.

I’m glad you found a good shipper.

I sent my Bushwheels up to ANC last spring and shipped my 8.50’s and Trickair skis back to Wisconsin. I used a broker. Www.freightcenter.com. They were by far the cheapest I could find….like 25% of the cost of UPS or FedEx. I saved additionally by delivering and picking up the shipments at the local freight terminals. Hope this helps.
