What oil do you folks use in your 150, 160, and 160 HP engines.

Brand, Viscosity, etc.

Eddie

Now you have asked the 64 dollar question. I work in a large shop and we use what the customer ask for. Mostly 15w50 shell, next 20w50 Phillips then a mix of everything else.

The Phillips as a multi grade seemed to last longer for me. Less blow by, on more than one engine. Price was nice also. I prefer the strait weight oils, but traveling was hard to find it often.

Here in sunny Florida, I use AeroShell 100w plus. But I did plug the cub in today as the temp is forecast to be near freezing tonight.

Best source I found is PSC lubricants out of PA(Wilkes-Barre?) for Phillips 100 at $46 case of 12qts.---great people to deal with---Aeroshell is available for $20 more---
Fleetwing Lubricants (Cocoa FL.) also handle Phillips oil---I get my "SMOKE OIL" from them---John(7FL6) Spruce Creek FL.

I used Aeroshell 15w-50 in my O-320 then switched to 20w50 Phillips. With the Philips it seemed that a lot less was going on my belly. Who knows why?

What viscosity do you Alaska folks use in the winter?

Eddie

Just as cold here in, MN.

IMO the 15/50 is the premier cold wx oil, I switched to Phillips 20/50 due to cost and availability and flying
much less in bitter cold as it's not as fun as it used to be. Many APs have told me the Cross Country 20/50 is
excellent for corrosion and clings well.

I was getting some unleaded ethanol free fuel for my ultralight from a local oil supply company here in town and the guy mentioned that he had a bunch of airplane oil he wanted to get rid of and if I might be interested. I figured it was a bunch of oil I couldn`t use but I agreed to take a look at what he had. We walked to the back of the warehouse and there were 10 cases of Phillips XC 20-50. I asked him what he wanted for it and he told me he wanted to get rid of it because he had no use for it and was I willing to pay him 5 dollars a case. I told him it was worth a lot more than that but he said he didn`t want to mess with it and I could have all 10 cases for 50 bucks. I smiled all the way home.

Is the Phillips XC that much better than the Aeroshell, I have always used Aeroshell but when I got the deal on the Phillips XC I couldn't turn it down

I don't think there's anything wrong with Aeroshell at all. It's more expensive. There's a good argument for the straight weight Aeroshell, that it doesn't run off the cam as quickly while the engine is sitting idle for long periods of time.

I ran Aeroshell in the past with no problems. Went to Phillips and Camguard mostly because the guy I fly the most with is running it. He usually has 3-4 quarts in the back of his 185 so I know where to get some oil if I am low:wink:. I also like the Camguard in the fall when I don't fly much.
