Engine mount bolts

I replaced the conical mounts bushings on my 0-320 PA-12. Does it matter which direction the AN 8-44 bolt faces?
It's a lot easier to place the cotter key with the bolt facing aft.

nuts to the pilot is what i have been told.

My piper 12 parts book shows nuts forward but the book has been wrong before.
