DWI's and Entry into Canada

WWhunter
Took note of your thread!!
You have to understand that back in that day I was a big fan of W
You have to understand that I have witnessed a LARGE number of folks that historically crossed the border NO PROBLEMO

Those folks have dissapeard and no longer come to Canada our area probably has 50% of visitors it used to have

The BS began when W created this huge security behemoth now we see it feeding itself hastling good folks who want to spend money and failing these random spot checks on their effectiveness
There is nothing BS about my first hand observations
I was so dissapointed in the end of the W adminstration not for reasons that was made popular back in that day but for beginning a legacy of what we have going on today
Bottom line is if you are going to pilot across the border you have to do your homework first and your passengers

At least across the northern border!!!!!
Someone is always ruining the fun!!!

C-YQK, I agree, the Canadian border is not and has never been a problem. These polices have only hurt the good people while leaving the southern border full of holes.

The Border Patrol says it has apprehended more suspected terrorists crossing the northern border than the south.

"The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency has apprehended more suspected terrorists on the nation’s northern border than along its southern counterpart, CBP Commissioner Alan Bersin said Tuesday."

With 25K of Syrian refugees coming into Canada, many of military age males, if just 0.1% were Jihadists, that would exceed the manpower of San Bernardino attack.

Gee Bee
look at the date on your article??????
Just last sunday was listening to a presentation that this notion that the bad guys are coming in from the northern border is now nothing more than an urban legend
from the canadian ambasador Mr.Gary Doerr

What happens if you are entering Canada via commercial airline? Are you asked when you go to purchase a ticket if you have had an OUI or do you find out after you land and are put on the next flight out ?

Bill

Not sure how it goes for US citizens to enter Canada, but I can tell you that when you check through the US customs and immigration desk at Montreal airport (CYUL) they rate many questions before letting you pass.
For instance: Have you ever been arrested in the US or any other country? Have you ever been charged for criminal offense (charged, not convicted), have you ever been pardoned for a criminal offense??
I was on a business trip, heading to Minnesota when I got the pardon question. You see, if you do have any criminal conviction or a "record" they will not allow you in the US from Canada. If that is your case, you must get a pardon before you can access the US. I asked if he was allowed to ask me this question. Response: You want to enter my country??? Lack of common sense works both ways...

A couple of questions I have in light of the announcement about the Senate passing the medical reform bill.
What happens to your pilot's license if you should loose your license for too many demerit points or any other considered non criminal reasons? Do you loose the pilot privilege too??
A good friend of mine has been flying for over 40 years and thousands of hours with no claims, no problems, etc. He does not have a drivers license, never has had one. What happens to him? Is he stuck with class 3 medicals every 2 years??
In any case, this news was a great step in the right direction.

Perhaps your Ambassador should remember the LAX terror plot of 1999. Where did Ahemed Ressam come in from? As he said, "NOW nothing more than urban legend" and that is because the controls have NOW been tightened. I assure you it was not an urban legend in 2001 and a car full of explosives proves the point.

Look if you have a DUI, I feel bad for that you cannot enter the US but the door is swinging both ways and there are ways to fix it. The Canadian bar has made it a profit center which I suspect is where this dog sleeps and eats.

I expect you would. Flying light sport is contingent on having a driver's license isued by a U.S. state. I have a friend from Norway who keeps a J3 here in the US and he has a US PPL. He does not qualify for light sport with his Norwegian driver's license. He had a US driver's license when he lived here, but it expired when his company moved him back to Norway. He went back to getting III class medicals. I expect the wording for the drivers license requirement will be the same for the PBOR2. jrh

Thanks for the clarification on passengers. I understood a driver with a record was refused entry into Canada. Good to know a passenger with a record will be turned back also.
Pre-9/11, my passenger was reminded he had a record by the Beaver Creek border gourds. I had to swear a blood oath he would be in my sight at all times, and we had to stop at Canadian border post near Haines to confirm he was still with me before entering U.S.
As I'm DWI-less, I never pondered the complications for pilots or plane passengers with records.

Oops. Left you hanging. I'll send you those cost comparisons when we return to Alaska.

Unless you plan way in advance, the ferry is very tough to use. Also, by the time you buy food for the days aboard, and get a room to sleep in, you will pay more than you will by flying and using the barge

The Cross Gulf ferry boat between Juneau and Whittier (and other stops) is a big help to folks from Northern & Southeast Alaska and Washington with new and very old DWI's. Those "criminals" who are turned around at the Canadian border outside Haines, Tok or Bellingham, can jump on the Cross Gulf ferry, then continue driving north or south. Spasmodic schedule for the Cross Gulf ferry tho.
Yeah, like 6-8 times a year sporadic.

I use to own a fishing camp in northern Saskatawawan, had to sell 63 trips per year to break even. All of our trips were U.S. Citizens. We had a lot of trouble with boarder crossings. This was in the 1990's. We ended up selling the camp. Which ultimately closed. Canada lost out on a lot of tourist dollars, but feel like the Canadain people always resented us fishing their area. They did lose a lot of tourist revenue, but I do not feel that was important to them. We did use Canadian guides float planes, food, licenses, fuel, boats, motors, etc. I do not have any record that would prohibit crossing the boarder, but will not go back. Instead I will go to Alaska. With that said, Northen Saskatawawan is beautiful, not sure I would want to share it either.

Now that is funny! Check the cost.

Barge the rig, fly AK airlines...

And here's the promised cross-gulf rates.
Juneau to Whittier: ferry, pickup plus passenger, $783+231=
vs.
Juneau to Anchorage: AML barge, pickup plus airfare, $4,110+300=
or
Juneau to Anchorage: another barge outfit, pickup plus airfare, $3,974+300=
In 2008 we barged equip, pickups and materials to King Salmon from Anchorage, our half-ton pickups were $2,000 each. Our barge costs to Shemya were proportionally higher.
I just received my renewed passport so I can drive thru Canada to Sitka this March.
I'd best stop diverting this thread from WOHN's original intent.
