image.webpimage.webpCame across the bones of Art Whitaker Model GW-100 Serial W-295 model dual wheels. Just wondering if anyone has any input on them.

We used to use them on the Dakota Plains. They worked great. The main thing they worked great for is cactus. You go through alot "West River." My Uncles still has a set for the Cub and one for the Cessna. If a tire goes flat at least you can fix it up to run on the good tire.

Back in early 80"s when I was learning to fly on Cape Cod you'd see planes that had them. They would land on sand bars at low tide. I'm sure tundra tires have taken their place. I picked them up for future use. Nice to switch stuff around. May never use them, but ......

A friend just found a set and thought he might try them on his J3.

"If big is good, then bigger is better, and too much is just about right."
Maybe these could be extended so tandem 31" BW's would fit.

Eric Preston (see picture in post #10) has a set for his PA-16. He's got several pictures with them installed. He has the Murphy 1800 floats installed now.

That's who they got them from. Did he sell enough to get his Bucker?
And his floats are amphibs too

Yeah, I have copies of his Field Approval for the floats, trying to pressure my FAA guy to sign a Field Approval for my PA-16 for them as well. Don't know if I would ever build a set but it would be kool to have them. Murphey 1800 amphibious float kit. I think he did get a Bucker, I've seen pictures of him with one in the hangar.

I knew someone who put them on her J3. I had been thinking about trying to find a set for my L-21A. When I went to the Cub Fly-in at Lompoc that year and was standing on the ramp, lo and behold a J3 flew overhead with Whitaker gear on it! When I asked the owner, Rowena Mason, she said they made it a bitch to turn on the ground. I never found a set to try out myself.

I put around 15 hours on the gear this week. Turns just a little bit better than skis on the ground. Track very straight though. Ride is worst than my 850x6 4 ply tires. To heavy and to much drag. Density altitude has been around 5500 everyday. Feels like your towing a glider. Was fun to experiment with. Might put them on my 160hp cub.

I have always been fascinated by this concept. What if they were rigged so that only one wheel was touching on hard surfaces?
