Cylinder Stud Port

Cardiff Kook

PATRON
Sisters, OR
Should my hole for my exhaust manifold stud hole look like this?

Seems very wide at the base- then narrows to stud size.

Respectfully, there’s a point where you have to accept that you don’t know what you don’t know. You really need to find a good mechanic. Especially if you’re going to be flying family members around.

No offense intended.

Cheers,

Andy

Since you easily backed out the stud and the threads are still in place in the cylinder, the stud should be replaced with an oversized stud. They come in several oversized diameters of the threads which go into the cylinder. This is an item which is not considered as "preventative maintenance". Get your A&P involved. An IA is not required to work on your engines.

Possibly a Helicoil had been installed at one time and it exited with the stud ?

There has not been a helicoil installed in that cylinder. That smooth section is the exhaust stack flange.

I am just information gathering. All work done on plane is legal.

I think there is an assumption, which is reasonable, that because I ask alot of mx questions here I dont seek A&P. Not the case.

When root of issue (exhaust manifold nuts came off) cropped up I contacted 3 a&p’s immediatly, AND did my own research in parallel here.

Yesterday (thanksgiving) I finally got an A&P to stop by on his way out of town. It took one month. Issue was not resolved. He has to come back (maybe another month?).

Sometimes info I gather and relay means one trip for these mechanics and not 2- which can cut my down time in half.

You've mentioned before the lack of support, but are there no airports with A&P's available nearby?

Yes. There are many a&p’s at other airports that are reasonably close. I am flying the skywagon to one to have fuel senders installed as well as fix a few things in 2 weeks. I scheduled that a month ago.

That seems reasonable, was just curious. Here in winter it slows their work, but it's all indoors if possible so hangar space is limiting. There are roaming free lance A&P's, but they tend to work when it's warm. A month out is quite normal especially if parts are needed and have to be ordered. Saves time if they are available before (ask for an expected pre-list), or the plane gets ramped until they arrive. Summers....forget quick fixes.

Gary

Sounds like you need to find a good A&P that you trust and build that relationship. Unfortunately they are getting harder to find.
