3.19.2010 Yakima, WA: The Carbon Cub SS has now taken to the water! CubCrafters’ comprehensive list of options for the Carbon Cub SS and the Sport Cub S2 now includes Baumann 1500A amphibious floats.

The spectacular STOL performance that the Carbon Cub SS has been widely recognized for is now available to pilots seeking an amphibious float application. CubCrafters has recently finished ASTM Certification of the Baumann 1500A amphib installation. The Carbon Cub SS and Sport Cub S2 may now may be ordered with this option or retrofitted for existing owners. The aircraft can be delivered as a one or two place airplane in either the Special Light Sport category, or as an Experimental Light Sport.
Lightly loaded the Carbon Cub SS amphib will be off the water in 4 seconds, 7 seconds at gross weight and climb with very little penalty. Low altitude climb rate with the amphibs is still 1,800 fpm at gross weight.

Landing gear retraction is handled by a lightweight mechanical mechanism with a floor mounted retraction handle. Dual water rudders are also included and provide very responsive taxi control. FAA regulations permit the gross weight on Light Sport Aircraft to be increased from 1,320 lbs to 1,430 lbs when floats are installed.

CubCrafters’ Owner and Chairman, Jim Richmond comments “Ever since introducing the Carbon Cub SS we’ve been fielding inquiries about amphibs so I’m most pleased to now have them available. The performance penalty in adding the amphibs was less than expected in all regards and results in a truly remarkable amphibious aircraft — I’m not aware of any float-plane that gets off the water quicker. This magic carpet will put a smile on the face of any seaplane pilot!”

Equipped with a lightweight 180 horsepower engine and using 21st Century technology like carbon fiber and 3D computer design technology, the Carbon Cub SS exhibits pulse-quickening behavior now on any terrain. Proving that high performance and Light Sport are not mutually exclusive, the Carbon Cub SS is without a doubt the go anywhere, do anything cub.

That is Amazing.....It performs so well that it would make a horrible trainer for seaplane ratings....the pilot would never learn to recognize what the "step" feels like....it just flys before you realize what happened

With floats installed does it still qualify for the two place LSA certification?

What is the useful load on Amphibs?
The Baumann amphibs are 235 lbs. Installed, they put the empty weight of our first customer plane at 1,050 lbs. Take that away from the Light Sport requisite gross weight (on floats) of 1,430 and you get a useful load of 380. Limited for sure, and barely a two place plane, but that's what happens when you enter the LSA category. Needless to say the plane itself flys just fine heaver than that, but you'd technically be illegal.

I must comment though, I've had the chance to fly the Carbon Cub SS three times now and it is so nimble, manueverable, and responsive that it is addicitve. I'd be willing to bet that the performance compromise (takeoff, climb, cruise speed) is less with these plane than maybe any other plane out there. Heck, think of it, or configure it, as a single place fun machine, I seriously doubt there is any amphib that is more enjoyable to fly. Sorry to wax so enthusiastically but flying that thing off the water is enough to make one giggle.
