they are saying these are beefed up so the 1 1/2 axles are not needed, does anyone have anything to say about the gear they are selling? other wise the atlee dodge 3 in extended looks like the way to go? would be much cheaper to go with cub crafters.

How many times have people seen 1 1/4 axles bend or break?

If they did bend or break, was it the main cause of the accident or were they bent/broken because of the accident.

I just ask because it seems that people think they need 1 1/2 axles. I seem to get by with 1 1/4's just as well.

The one I remember a couple years ago, a guy just fiddling with his plane at his tie down, and going gee that wheel looks crooked.... He found his Axel was cracked bad when he pulled tire... 1 1/4".

But these guys are landing in the tundra for a couple months strait each year also hauling hunters....

Was on a -14 retrieval one year and could believe how ruff the place was... ( it broke apart one of those old snap ring 4 or 5 inch wheels, spun, bend bend bend... Hench the reason for the retrieval..)... And just praying it didn't bend again as he banged back through there with it patched together...
I think that was the first time I got to ride with Redbaron on here, him & his friend dropped me and my tools off to fix it....

Cubceafter makes good product but I've had the 3" 11/4" gear bend went with atlee dodge 11/2 " 3" ext no problems in 1200 hrs

When I was collecting parts for the -12 project I spent a good bit of time talking to and getting advice from Atlee Dodge. When asked about gear and axle size Atlee told me that 1 1/4" axles were every bit as tough as 1 1/2" and that I should use 1 1/4".

I wonder what Burl used during his AOSS drop tests. If he was bending and breaking axles I don't think he'd have gotten his STC.

The way I understood the 1 1/2" axles became popular because people were using the 1 1/2" wheels and brakes off other airplanes to put on their Cubs because they were plentiful. I priced Cub Crafters and Atlee Dodg and didn't remember any significant price difference. Cub Crafters axle is a piece of billet machined out. I have always had exceptional service from Atlee's so I bought their gear.

which?

I'm buying ext gear. I'm leaning towards Atlee over the Cub Crafters. Would you replace the cabane with the purchase of new gear? New hydrosorbs?

I've had the 1.25" CC gear and 1.50" Dodge gear. I can't see that 1.25" would be weaker. CC has a good strong thick-walled axle. But the lower shock struts lengths are different between the two by 7/16". That is the hole-to-hole distance, with the Dodge being longer. You'll want to get the struts from the maker of the gear legs. Both can use the same cabane; be it Piper, CC's or Dodge's.

Piper or Univair Hydrsorbs will work with either. No need to replace anything but bungees unless they're beat up.

The CC gear also comes with a welded-on fueling step. The Dodge step is extra and clamps on.

Any PIREPS on the new CC 3x3 gear? How much heavier are they and do you notice any performance difference?

DW just put on those CC 3x3 gear. He's headed to the airmans show and Valdez. He should have a pirep for you. But, I know he likes them. Much lighter than his previous.

hey guys it's been awhile since i posted this thread, i spent alot of time doing research before i bought my gear. i ended up going with atlee dodge 3 in extended and 1 1/2 axles i also had to buy a new wheel and brake kit because my previous set was not the right stuff at all. this drove my decission for the 1 1/2 axles. in the end im not sure it was worth it because even though the cleavland wheel and brake kit for the cub with 1 1/2 axles is cheaper than for the 1 1/4 axles you still have to buy the stc from atlee to put them on. cleavland wheel and brake kit part # 199-62 is the kit i ended up getting. it is actually for a cessna 180 or 185, i talked with cleavland and the guy said that there more common and thats why they are priced cheaper. im guessing this is one of the reasons atlee went through the trouble of getting an stc for them. through cleavland this kit is around 1500 dollars but he said after shipping you would be just as well off buying it from one of the dealers here.

also one of the mechanics from the marina here in fairbanks told me the 1 1/4 wheel and brake kit is about 10 lbs lighter than the 1 1/2 kit. not for sure though, i would call cleavland to find out. they are very easy to talk to. i also spent alot of time talking with some older guys here in fairbanks and was told another reason for the swap to 1 1/2 axles was for ski flying. there are alot of options for wheel and brake kits and landing gear. there is paper work for everything and costs lots of money! make sure you have a solid plan before you do it.

hope this helps your decision, good luck!
