Cowling Fasteners for the 180 Cub?

Cub Crafters 180 Cub conversion with four Dzus style fasteners per side. I asked CC, but they never got back to me. Anybody know the part # for both the fastener and the receptacle?

Camloc 4002 series for the studs and 2600/2700 for the receptacles work well...you need to select the correct length. Check out Aircraft spruce on Camloc and it's all pretty well laid out. I prefer the blade style studs for slow airplanes, since you don't need a tool to access.

Steve.

I was kinda hoping somebody else had had the same problem and figured it out. Dzus, Southco, Camloc - so far all Greek to me. I do have access to installation tools.

These are “blade style,” I guess. A little butterfly to twist a quarter turn.

so...it's fairly easy...you measure the thickness you are securing...then select the length Camloc in the 4002 style. The Receptacles are all the same.

The quarter turn 4002 comes in either blade or screw driver head.

Pretty straight forward.

I believe these are the proper camlocs for the CC 180 horse cub IMG_1021.webp

I used 4 of these on my 180 Javron cowling. Search "Piper Cowl Latch" on Ebay. Good quality item.

I am building a Bearhawk Patrol and installed the Cowl latches in post #11. Patrol Plans called for dzeus hasteners. I like how the Piper Cowl Latches cinch the upper and lower halves together. The cowl doors with Dzeus Fasterners get closed, and fastend but don't exert a clamping force. It common for a Bearhawk with the Dzeus fasteners to have one positioned on th eleading edge of the door half way between the upper hinge and the bottom of the cowl door. Remember the Plenum get pressurized in flight.

I modified the troublesome fastener using the Camloc 4000 series. Jury is still out, and I still need to insert the retaining ring, but the overall quality of the parts looks like a giant leap forward when compared with the spring sheet metal Southco fastener.

I am still not an expert, but I captured a 244-16S floating receptacle and a 4002-6 SW stud. The stud requires a collar and a retaining ring.
I reamed the hole to .428, then I forced the collar in. It went “snap.” Next week I will capture the retaining ring and special insertion tool and finish the job.

The original Southco receptacle - two flimsy spring steel sheets - had the small hills that retain the stud all worn down. The stud would go in, but then during flight it would just rotate out.

Looks like the eBay version uses a southco stud and not the original “Lyon” stud and receptacle for the cowl latch? Maybe someone who’s purchased can confirm? I’d be a little leery of a southco in that application- probably ok when new but the Lyon type are a much more positive lock.

I installed these latches with Southco hardware. I resourced the latch separately from the quarter turn hardware. I am still building, so it has not been field tested, however, I love the latches, love the feel of the Southco. A new Southco quarter turn fastener has a strong overcenter latch mechanism. The latch and fastener parts fit together as though it was intentionally designed that way. I have not, not do I expect to be able to test it side-by-side with a competing fastener.

My thoughts on Bob's feedback in post #13 on the Southco..... I have no reason to doubt Bob's fastener and mod is sound and his report on the Southco wear and tear is factual. His report of them wearing out does not make me want to remove my new install to replace it with his mod, but I will experiment with lubing the receptable to fight the wear due to his feedback. I believe I can feel the Southco receptacle loosing its over center design strength and replacing the worn parts with new parts is easily within my abilities. Southco parts are available at Aircraft Spruce.

Opinion.....When one gets into research quaterturn fasteners it can be overwhelming. Just Pick one and get back to building. You cant go wrong with any one of these...southco, camloc, skybolt, dzeus. But the Southco fits the latches without modification.

I don't guess I have ever differentiated the Lyon stud and the Southco. Can you elaborate?

Steve,
Did that STC call for a fiberglass cowling, like the CC-18-180?

As installed on the 180hp Javron. A member on the forum suggested making a thin aluminum template for marking and drilling the latches. Worked great.
