Continental IO-520-F core value

A BELLAND

PATRON
Nanaimo, BC
Looking for a opinion on a core value for a IO-520-F. Was told it’s a older engine that doesn’t have a VAR crank or phase 3 case. There is no logs but was told it was running and flying when parked years ago. trying to understand if there is any value to this engine or is it a unwanted relic.
thanks in advance, Aurele

The problem with any CORE is you don't know what you have until the engine is disassembled and inspected. The cost to have the major components certified or rejected can easilly run into the thousands. Ideally the seller would allow you to determine which components are serviceable and adjust price accordingly.

Internal parts have a little value but you don't know what they are like until it's apart.
Without a var crank and phase 3 case even continental won't take them as a core except on special occasions.

Nothing wrong with phase 2 cases when you need a case

Have one here too not worth much the phase 2 cases usually had so many overhauls by now, they are likely to crack - mine was already repaired on the last overhaul No VAR crank and it is a Boat anchor thats about it.

I believe they made me write a check for $14,000 but they held it until I turned in the core. I think it was more that they wanted the engine out of circulation more than what it was actually worth. They (AirPower) gave me my check back when I turned in the core. This was 3 or 4 years ago for my '79 185. Original engine.
