The wife is giving me a new radio for my panel for Christmas. I had an Icom A-210 in my biplane and I liked it but I was wondering if the Garmin GTR-225 is better. Any suggestions?

I just got the trig radio and xpdr for mine. Small and light.

The 210 has been nothing but trouble. Myself and at least one other shop here, won't install them anymore. LOTS of noise and squelch setting issues. If you have a 210 and it works, I salute you, but they aren't worth taking a chance with. I have installed a few of the GTR-225's and have had no issues, with the radio, as of yet.

As you can tell from my previous posts, I'm a big fan of the smaller radios that mount in an instrument hole. Becker, Trig, or Microair.

The ICOM IC-A210 looks good to me. I have been using ICOM IC-A200s for about 20 years without an issue.

The one in my biplane has worked fine for me too but it never hurts to got other folks opinion about things

Completely different animal than the 200. The 200 was a drop in replacement (and cheaper) for the Bendix KY-97A. Same tray, same pinout. The 210 was an 'updated' radio. Different tray and connectors. You have to remove the faceplate in order to remove the radio from the tray. Try doing that 10 or 15 times in an hour or two while troubleshooting. And as I stated above, they have LOTS of noise issues. It's most definitely not a radio to recommend.

Oh, by the way, Icom stopped making 200's when they started making 210's.

I had nothing but good from my 210 in my last Cub. Origionally ordered one for my current project. Switched to the Garmin but it had nothing to do with the quality or performance of the 210. Used the built in intercom as well and it worked great. Just my experience.

I have a almost new 210 collecting dust on a shelf. After several trips to several shops it just wouldn't work. Icom won't sell the ribbon connecter that goes from the face plate to the radio. I used to really like Icom stuff.
I bought a Garmin. the 210 is a bad design, and Icom has poor suport for it.

I've been using the Trigg TY91 (com) and TT22 (transponder) with excellent results. CubCrafters installs Trigg avionics with their current Carbon Cub "World VFR" panel.
