Broke my dang skylight

I could have bought a PA-11 float lift eye, BUT NOOOOO, I had to push my luck and believe my IA.

So we used a chain wrapped around the through spar. It worked for an hour or so, and then the Aviation Gods needed to punish my foolishness.

The chain shifted, and boom, a nice big chunk of the overhead window went flying through the air.

Well at least I have the new brakes installed. Now I have to head down to the glass store and buy some smoked lexan.

I am such a bozoo...

Now I don?t know about the PA-11, so I gotta ask.
Did the chain ?bite? the plastic or did the superstructure squeeze?
And the IA?did he at least say?OOPS?

1838 hours, and I just came home after installing a new skyklight window. It is all new and glossy.

I should go sit a five gallon jerry jug full of av-gas right in the middle of it, just so I can get it over with.

The piece that flew out of the old one was the size of a playing card.

I wanted .080 smoked lexan, but,,, here in Homer I had to settle for 1/8 inch smoked plexi...

Nope, he said:

" You wanted to change that anyway, didn't you???"

PA-11s are weird since they need to be supported in the middle instead of at the wing roots like a supercub.

Some how or another, somebody makes a single twisted flat stock , that bolts to the frame/spar attach point and then sticks up in the middle through the little sheet metal fairing just ahead of the skylight.

I would like to see one that has been installed.

I had the 56 PA18A lifted off floats this year using a home made welded rig and two other than mine lifting eyes. In retrospect all was in complete trust of the A&P since he provided all. Before the spring float install I have considered purchasing my own lifting rings from Atlee Dodge to be permanently installed negating removal of the wing root trim metal. I intend having my own lifting rig welded up so I am beholding to no one and assuring more than adequate strenght. John

Alex--For my -11 I made an aluminum plate that unscrews from rivnuts to reveal the spars and the front windshield tubes. I put a reinforced strap around the tubes when I lift mine. The strap then connects to the chain fall for lifting. Since it is in front of the struts it cannot damage the skylight.

There is certainly something peculiar about hanging an airplane up, that's for sure!

I thought most people with out lift rings used the back of the engine mount. I always thought that was what to do.Where should they be lifted? My rigs all have lift rings, but lots of people use my fiels for their float changes, just wondering. Any of you guys in maine can use my float change rig if you want. We have a fixed rig with 12 volt winch, and dolly to get in and out of the androscoggin. It is real rugged,we change 180/185's and lots of others. This is a do it yourself deal.Usually if we know your coming there will be some hang arounds to help.

Good point--the back of the engine mount, when used with a strap, works really well on Super Cubs and the like. I use the top brace simply because of the geometry of the hangar and the position of the hoist. I can't push the airplane far enough back to use the hoist....so I use Plan B a lot.

When I'm over at the other field I just use the back of the engine mount.

But never use the hoist point on the engine to lift an airplane.

Bad things can and will happen to your plane and your checkbook.

Pzinck, I need to fly over and pay a social call.

Some good day, maybe we could all meet at norridgewock. That would be close to flying miss daisy.Anyone on straight skis can land on the side of the strip, the one closest to the pumps they use for grass,or striaght skis in winter. You are more than welcome to come over here as well.It would be cool if all the maine guys could meet some good saturday or sunday at a central location. J p Do you know plane crazy from lincoln? I have chatted with him, maybe he could come too.

That would be fun. I do know Plane Crazy. I've "borrowed" Miss Daisy. Where is your site on the river so I can mark it in my Gazeteer?

I have a little strip it is between rt 2 and the river in rumford. It would be about 1 mile east of mcdonalds. The approach from the north east is over rt 2,. There is a windsock. In the winter, i leave the planes in rumford center in a hangar.Hopefully i will have a hangar at my strip by this fall.Sometimes i will leave a plane at my strip in the winter if the weather is predicted good. If you are over this way circle the citgo station east about a mile of my strip, and ill drive up. Not plowed ,so skis this time of year. Phil

Me thinketh fun.

The West Branch Boys and Lincoln Types have been joining up at MLT and wandering around the North from there on weekends. I know Planecrazy usually does an outing... Dentist Bob is also based at MLT with an L-19 on pen. skis.

As for JP, he's got a bum mag that won't get fixed until mid-week next week. So, he's got to bum a ride. Miss Daisy?

If you guys pick a spot and time , i will try to make it.Weekends been busy, lots of long distance towing out of sunday river ski area.I did get to bring the 185 back from twitchells sunday. My pager was going off the minute i got airborne.Oh well Thats my life. I dont know if i would make it up north, but mid state could get there for a coffee or something.

I was up by Millinocket today messing around, found a great spot on Pemadumcook, stopped to take a whiz and eat lunch. Would be a great spot for a mass gathering. Let me see my work sched this weekend, I think Sun about lunchtime would be better than Sat. for me. I will start a new thread about our impromtu ski plane fly in tomorrow, titled Maine Skiplane Flyin

Ok OK Ok .... I am going to Fla this weekend for a business meeting first of the week. Then Myself and Jen are on to Costa Rica to meet friends for a week. Please do not be impressed. This is the first time for both of us and we totally do not know what to expect. Our friends from Jonesport have been many times and are taking the lead. Well Jeff with a bum Mag and all and POOR MISS DAISY hangar bound for the last few weeks it is time to excercise her. You need to include my great friend Jeff C. He loves Daisy as much as I do. However I believe his PPL check Ride is Sunday. See what you can do. Treat her right and have Tony give you a quick check out like you really need it. Have fun and take care of my girl. John

Did you pee in my lake?

I'm on North Twin in the summer.

It needs to be publicly recognized that Jeff C. is one heck of a stick and rudder pilot. Don't let the fact that he is "just" getting his PPL fool you. He was born flying Cubs. Watching him fly a tailwheel airplane is a treat to behold. I plan to fly with him a lot and if one-tenth of his touch rubs off I'll be a better pilot for it.

We're going to hold a fly-in over Memorial. Details to be posted shortly.

I know several guys that had 1000's of hours and years as a student pilot.I guess that isnt as feasible now a days.

I'm having a good laugh sitting here thinking of some of the grand old Maine Cub pilots. A good number never had a license--and never will!! pzinck probably knows a few, too.

I really like the old characters that fly.The guys with their n # on their jackets are allright, but the old timers are the real gems.I can only imagine what alaska has to offer in characters that could care less about the regulations. Oh to live in a time long ago when things werent so clicky and if a plane flew good it was more important than the paint job.

JP and all:

Been gone all day, burned up a serious amount of avgas, played hookey from work again today. I cant remember a more glorious stretch of feb weather than the last few days. Had to go to a dinner tonight or I would have been in sooner. I propose a massive skiplane flyinn on Pemadumcook Lake Saturday afternoon at noon. I will post a new thread now to get everyones attention. I talked to the Beech Hill pond airforce yesterday, they will attend, I hope Jeff C and some out of MLT can come too. And no JP, I peed in my airplane pee bottle and brought it home with me. Yea, thats it brought it home.

Jim

Scouter:

Awesome--simply awesome! And on my stompin' grounds, too. I love those lakes.

Who is riding up with you on Saturday? I'm looking to bum a seat and shoot some film for the Ski DVD....

The Beech Hill Air Force is a great addition. Good bunch and loads of fun. Nothing like a good chase around Beech Hill pond on a warm summer night, busting up BBQs with waterballoons, etc.

Guess that makes me a Pushaw Pirate, Millinocket Rocket and Miller's Field Fury all at once.

Jeff:

Not sure if my son is going to go or not. Girls and basketball you know. Give me a call tonight at 379- 3641 if you still need a ride, at the least I could leave my son off on the lake and pick you up at MLT. I wont be back home until 8 pm or so. Sounds like a nice crowd coming. Ski fly DVD huh? Sounds like fun.
