Borer Prop Questions

I have a 150hp PA-12 and would like to put a Borer prop on it. Right now I have a Sens. 8040 wood prop. It turns 2700 @ full throttle (sea level) and produces just over 100 mph IAS. At 2475 (sweet spot for this eng) I cruise @90 , and a full throttle climb @ 60mph shows about 2500 rpm. My hope is to keep my rpm/speed relationships about where they are but improve my takeoff/climb somewhat. I'm thinking a 8242 would be about right. I already have 3" extended legs and 26 GY's so clearance isn't an issue. Any input would be appreciated. Also, where should I look to buy one and about what to expect to pay? Was hoping to avoid dealing with the Dark Side (C.C.) if possible!

I removed my Sensenich 80x40 wood prop and went with a Borer 82x43 and lost takeoff and climb performance. I gained 6 mph of cruise speed though. If you are looking for more takeoff and climb you may not get it with the Borer over the wooden Sensenich. At least that is what happened in my case. The wood Sensenich is going back on.

Perry,

There is so much variability in these little engines that I don't think any one can answer your question with reasonable accuracy.

The good news is that the Borer props can easily be repitched, so if your first guess is a bit off, have it repitched. A pain in the butt, but you'll probably only have to do it once.

I just put a new Borer prop on my PA 18 150. I put on an 82-43 and it is just right. It will turn 2800 in level flight and 2500 static. These numbers are with my tech checker because my tech is almost 100 Rs off. Interestingly enough the static rpm was more with the stock 74-52 that was on there. I get a little shorter take off, but noticeably better climb with the borer. But most importantly the plane is much smoother now. If the performance were the same it would still be worth it. I should note that I have the Leading Edge exhaust that is claimed to give something like 16 hp increase. I don't think it gives me that much but I believe that it helps...........

Dans Aircraft (www.dansaircraft.com) can advise and help you in this matter. I would recommend a 82X41 for max takeoff performance and if you are also looking for good airspeed then perhaps a 82X44 would provide you the best overall performance. Wood props might be light, but in trying one a couple years ago on my 150hp I went back to the Borer.
A couple years ago I had to take a big sledge hammer and a file to mine in order to get back home (I was 400 miles away in the Yukon). I don't think a wood prop would have stood up to that kind of field adjustment.

Sometimes it pays to be on the leading edge of the pack and other times you just get eaten. I think a Mc 82x41 to 44 is going to be your best bet, and will bring the best resale if you ever sell it or your cub.

BTW I run a 83X43 on my 160hp and find it to be better than 34DD's

Jim Fix out of Nebraska would be my choice for a Borer. He checks the pitch and balance before shipping it out with new prop bolts and log book. I paid $2,800 delivered this past spring ! Usually can have it in a week.
