Beware of those gummies...

I had a DPE speak to me about a corporate pilot who took a handful of gummies from a bowl at an FBO during a recent trip. He returned to his home base and underwent random drug testing...and tested positive for THC. This is causing him problems with the FAA and he is awaiting disposition.

I think this is going to be an event bigger problem as more states legalize THC. I have pinged my contact at our Regional Flight Surgeon's office and will let you know what I find out.

Beware!

Hmmm that would be a very expensive bowl of candy for an FBO to give out. There is more to this story I would say…

Yea, don't see much unwrapped candy out in FBOs these days. Cathy, her sister, Tabitha, Taylor and her Mom went on a girls trip recently to Fredericksburg. Cathy had been joint pain and Tabitha told her she needed some CBD gummies. She went into one of those stores and told the kid behind the counter about the joint pain and she wanted some CBD gummies. He said he had just the thing and went behind the wall and sold her a jar of gummies. Her Mom asked about the jar and Cathy told her what it was and the both took one and they went to lunch. Part way through lunch Cathy said she felt like she had smoke pot. Taylor looked and it was Delta8 which she said has THC in it. It is an embarrassing joke with Cathy's Mom now cause she really liked the feeling. 8)

FYI Some of the new fruity type energy drinks also have no-no substances in them. They'll put them in the drink cooler without any particular labeling.

From my contact at the FAA:

The MRO (Medical Review Officer) for the Airman’s company has to review the testing and interview the airman. The company MRO will decide how to proceed. Since the test was supposedly positive, the Airman will need to report the outcome of the MRO investigation and recommendation to the FAA and we will evaluate the situation. Since the Airman is coming to see you, after you interview the Airman, please draft a letter explaining the situation and include any documentation that the Airman may receive from the MRO investigation.

There you have it, folks. I will be seeing this fellow soon.

expensive as in getting sued?

I'm in Canada where its legal...I hear they are not very expensive there anyway.

If it was truly an accidental incident I feel bad for the guy and hope he can get it resolved. However, more than a few pilots have been added to the HIMS program who have claimed they were "inadvertently" exposed to THC through the use of CBD products or unknowingly eating something containing THC.

The increasing prevalence of such products definitely does give reason for extra vigilance. It appears that there is zero regulation on these new products and I would not trust my Medical Certificate/Career on a label of any of these products claiming to not contain THC.

Can’t help but think of some of the better Cheech and Chong quotes…..

Cheech man, I'm gonna be late for work again. That's the fifth time this week, and it's only Tuesday, man……

Man, if you had a second brain, it would die of loneliness, man.….

Responsibility is a heavy responsibility!

It's funny where you brain goes... this thread reminded me of this 70's earwig of a song..

Funny but also not funny. It’s getting bad everywhere. Not to mention Vaping. Take a hit off the wrong one from one of your buddys vape and you could pop hot on the next random pee test. I don’t vape nor smoke, but I’ve seen plenty of WTF moments by regular folks and their “friends”.

Were the issues surrounding recreational drug use this bad in the 80's with all the coke cowboys or is this worse... it seems worse now.

Depends on who you hung out with. I was on a salvage ship out of Pearl Harbor in 79, Most all E6 and below pot or whatever was handy, E7 and above just Drank a LOT!! Lots of junior officers did pot. That is before they came out with the piss tests. After a few rounds of several people getting busted on the testing most just started drinking a lot.
I was the Corpsman and hand control of the narcotics safe, it was made clear that any drug use would be time behind bars so went to drinking sooner than most of my fellow enlisted. Pot is easy to transport and consumes 47 times it weight in excess reality like any addiction it can be hard to give up.

I've heard tell the stuff is far more powerful than the weed of yore that we saw about in our high school years of the late 70s/early 80s. Heard a funny story the other day about a guy who had a hit from a buddy's vape, not realizing it wasn't nicotine, but some of the modern happy weed. He was driving a boat at the time and about ten minutes later started yelling out "holy shiz" and ducking, repeatedly.

When asked to explain, he said whenever he looked up at the cloud streets he saw powerlines, and ducked! Shortly after that he started to lose all sense of time and direction, which compounded to the hilarity of the situation. Thank goodness he wasn't flying anything.

I was in high-school during the middle 80's in Central CA, meth capital of the world then, thousands of acres of pot in Madera County, blow, crack, heroine and lord knows what else... Anyway with the death toll now, it seems worse. Plenty of folks were dead from OD then, but somehow it sounds worse now.... Anyway just a perspective check.

JP, that’s exactly what I meant in my post above! Take one hit off of a buddys vape, not knowing or him telling you and end up popping hot on a random.

There’s like 24 dispensary’s here, and in one podunck town I counted 8. They must be subsidized or something, there’s no way there’s that many potheads. TPTB sure want the population dumbed down.

Back in '73, on the coast of Big Sur, prior to launching off San Martin top ( a high ridge about 2700' above the narrow stretch of beach that was our LZ, so narrow that if it was high tide and you caught the wave action wrong, you'd be landing in knee deep surf) with the Kilbourne brothers (in hang gliding circles, that's like saying you knew Orville and Wilbur) I seem to remember watching the pre launch smoke as a wind indicator. It was a marginal slope, making for a tricky launch, with no options if you blew it, so any little upslope breeze helped a lot. Early hang gliding had a lot of pot use, pretty tame stuff though compared to now I'm told, and mostly that went away in later years, somehow we lived thru it. That 2700' glass air sled ride over the redwoods to the beach below was something I'll never forget though.
