Belly Pod pa-12 field approval

I want to put a firman pod on my 12. I just don't like the approved airglass pods the door is to small they are heavier. The 12 and 18 airglass pod are same they just put a fiberglass flange on them so they fit the 12 better. In my pursuit of a field approval I have been told that this cannot be approved because PA-12 does not have same supporting structure as PA-18. Does anybody have opinion on this? I am under impression that bottom fuselage is pretty much the same PA 12/18. Does anybody have some drawing I could compare the 2?? or am I way of base. Second issue, They say there is potential for control jamming if I hit something hard enough to ram belly pod into bottom of fuselage. This point is hard to argue!! I think at that point my landing gear would be gone prop would be bent I would have many other issues to deal with. I am Just trying to get my facts straight before I pursue this further. Thanks for any help

control jaming not an issue... same with or with out pod.... you'd be very much done crashing by time that could even be a discussion item...

I had s/n 008 field approved on -12 and Bill Firmin's (who built first pods) personal plane was a -12 and the -12 pods were built before the -18 pods. The STC testing for -18 was a nightmare for him and he died before he got the -12 pod STCd. My current 12 has a field approved pod.

I had an unfortunate accident with loss of power on my first -12 and hit directly on the pod and destroyed it. No control jamming and I don't see how that could happen as there is a lot of "crushability" in the pod, it's not going to have the strength to push up longerons.

Been discussed here several times. Several guys here have field approvals for Alaska Bush Pods on -12s, some more recent that others. Bill Firmin put the attach tabs on my old -12 not long before he passed away. He told me the FAA would never approve the install. I told him I'd try until they gave in. Ultimately they did. That approval was in 2009 and I've shared it with several members here. More recently a friend used that approval as a template for approval of a Bush Pod on our 180s. The 180 approval didn't require as much paperwork. The approval procedure was different but the end result was simpler to achieve.

Do I have an opinion about this? Why yes, I do! The gist of it is "nonsense", but much more vulgar.

Don't know if it will do you any good, but my -12 had a Firmin pod on it in 1995 and I can give you what paperwork I have from the airworthiness records if you would like to see it.

I know this is a 10 year old post, but if you have the details on your field approval, I could use them as a reference. Taking the J5A to the FAA for field approval of pod install.

I have the 337 and the (then) required flight manual supplement in pdf on my computer. PM me an email address and I’ll be happy to share them. Same for guys interested in a AK Bush Pod on a 180. I have that 337, too. No flight manual was required for the Cessna.

I own Stewart's plane now. Have everything scanned in a PDF. Several people have used it as approved data for a FA. I'm out in the bush at -25⁰ and have to make another trip to Los Anchorage tomorrow. Give me a day or two and I will email it to you. @stewartb

I put a carbon concepts pod on my 12 and I would love to get any leg up on 337's or field approvals...
i'm in San Diego and the feds here could be a real problemo.

Tom - SAN FSDO has been incredibly good to me in the past. I hold 17 approvals, all within the last 15 years. A lot depends on who gets assigned.I was just turned down for two, but I re-submitted them asking for a different inspector. I will let the community know how that works out - one of them is so dirt simple dga offered to do it for free. These are cargo pods, right? Does the -12 have enough lift to take advantage of the extra space?

Our FSDO is great, good team and reasonable to work with. Not rubber stamper type, they let you know what's needed and work with you. Regarding question on lift, more a question of gross weight, w&b, structural integrity and the short answer is yes. It's all good in the numbers.

It's only a cargo pod...no fuel in this one. I can't tell any difference in any flying config. The pod only weighs 13 lbs. and I lost 15 lbs changing my baggage to carbon. Basically, now I can keep the weight where I want it.

I have a FA for the Alaskan bush pod by Bob Piatt on my -12.
based on a previous FA and it is larger than the Airglass pod that I have too.

Doug

The pod arrived damaged. New one being built, but so far the process has been straight forward. Working on the dakota cub wing field approval at the moment.

I would love to have copies of this! I will PM you.

No, I removed the aluminum panels that I originally fashioned and made the carbon panels and floors myself..., took alittle time, but they came out real nice. I weighed everything as it came out and as the new ones went in..., 13# weight savings.

If you look above I have Stewart’s -12 now and have a complete package with Field Approval 337, installation instructions, weight and balance modifications with loading arms, continued maintance compliance and flight manual supplement. There have been quite a few that used this information as previously approved data for Field Approval applications.

Hello! Can I get a copy of the 337 and the flight manual supplement for the Pa 12. I am going to put on a carbon fiber belly pod on and try to get approval on a 337. Thank You!

Shoot me a message with an email. Will share what I used for an “owner produced” carbon fiber pod referencing the firmin PA-18 STC on my J5A (pre war pa-12) that leveraged some of the other documents shared by members.
