belly pod info??

I had to remove my Atlee Dodge lumber rack when I installed my new bellie pod. Any body looking for a good lumber rack for a PA-18?

Anyone willing to share their experience with the Airglas pod? I am considering adding a belly pod, saw the Airglas at the AK Airmens Tradeshow.

If you do not need a fuel tank, go bush pod.

I have the Airglass combi pod. Lots of $$$$ for it, and then you need the pump; oh, and by the way, do you want the install kit with that?

It is smaller. At the time, it was the only certified pod with both fuel and cargo... and it works for me now that I have it.

Wish Bushpod would make a combi with the 18 gal. sized tank... that is all I need, and want the extra room forward...

I have a Landis 18 gal fuel and cargo pod which is very handy for both. The cub it is on is on floats now all summer and I never bother to put it on anymore in the winter so if you are interested I am planning on selling it. I used to use it all summer on floats until the Feds said a 180 hp cub on floats with a 1750 max is pushing the limit and if I wanted to keep it 135 they strongly reccomended removing the pod so I have not used it much since.

cubdriver55 - isn't a Supercub's gross weight on floats increased to 1950 vice 1750 on wheels? Leastways that's what my records say.

Nope! It is 1760 on floats. That is unless you have some type of STC on yours. The following is the type certificate data sheet for the PA-18.

I think it might have been Crash that said he welded tabs on his fuselage rather than using clamps for his pod. I'm planning on welding those tabs on during our build but I recently got interested in Atlee's Lumber Rack also. Can you weld on provisions for both the pod and the rack so you could use either as needed or do the attachment locations conflict with each other?

Hi all, I am finally getting around to installing the Firmin pod I bought a few months ago on my Supercub. I have teh weld on Atlee Dodge float hardware and these little dog ears that go under the belly are in the way of the pod. Are you supposed to cut away the pot to fit it here?

yes, notch

Thanks Mike! Do you just nothch the fiberglass and leave the rubber sealing bead in place as it may fit underneath the tabs when in place?

been a long time ago, i think i cut it, but you can try without, some one else will have to chime in.....

is that a real old firmin pod? or a new akbushpods one??? I thought firmin dimpled the sides to go around (most of) the float fittings.....

mspenc45,

just take a dremmel tool and cut your notch to fit around the float fittings. pull the rubber seal up out of the way to notch, that way after your cut you just have to push the seal back down into your new notch. Real easy and looks OEM. I have a pic if needed.

Does anyone know of a step that will replace the step I must remove when the bellypod is installed, or perhaps there is just a new Hoky Poky dance you have to learn to get into a Cub wothout a step?

I have the first PA12 pod that Firmin ever built. Serial # is 1. I would not be without mine. I can carry gas funnels, oil cans, fish, or boned out meat. It didn't change my airspeed and it places the weight well forward, as well as keeping those odors out of the plane. Now that Firmin is no more, Piatt has the business and his # is given in previous posts. I like the one totally for baggage. I have only used mine with wheels and skiis.

I would think it a sure thing to be roasted if you knock the gear off with fuel in.a belly pod. Or am I missing something?

I went straight into the ground from 100 feet and dumped 12 gallons of fuel from the nose tank on the engine and no fire.

Interesting question. Fuel in a belly tank is probably less threatening to occupants than fuel in wing tanks. It's below and behind the primary ignition threats.

just talked to faa, no more field approvals for -12, since the -12 is now in the works for getting an stc :-) so that sounds good.....

so someday we will have an stc one for -12...

So I sold my PA18, but kept my pod in hopes to use it for my experimental, which is very similar to a PA12, and bottom is the same as a 12. My PA18 Firman Pod fit perfectly, only had to add a 1.5" tab on the rear, and 2" tab on front straps.

I think the field approval winds have changed since Mike made that comment. I haven't heard of field approvals on -12s lately but I got one last year for a Firmin pod on my 180. a friend did the paper and it was simpler than what it took a few years earlier to get a -12 pod approved.

This site would benefit many if there was a field approval wiki or at least a contacts list for guys who are looking for approved data.

Bob delivered my Pod late last summer, it was later than initially planned but once he called and explained his situation and that he was ok he built mine complete with custom color and delivered just as promised. When we last spoke he sounded good, him a call...
