Back to My Roots

As noted in another thread, I recently acquired a bright shiny almost "new" Piper PA 11 Cub Special, thanks largely to the assistance of Dave Tunge.

My first exposure to airplane ownership was with a Piper J-3. That J-3 allowed me to explore Kodiak Island in my off duty hours, while during work hours I flew a PA 18. The Cub introduced my nephew to seaplane ops and more importantly, to fishing for silver salmon as a birthday present on his 14th. A great little airplane it was on EDO 1320 floats and Goodyear 25 inch Airwheels. Eventually, I moved on to bigger and "better" airplanes, but thoughts of that Cub have always provided fond memories.

My recent "re-retirement" got me to considering a smaller airplane than my trusty Cessna 170, an airplane that has served me well for nearly twenty years.

So, this Tuesday, I caught a six AM flight out of my new home in Bozeman, en route to Yankton, SD. There, I met my new ride, a Piper PA 11 Cub Special (I know, this IS SUPER Cub.org, not cub special.org, but this airplane is "special"). After three stops for fuel, and meeting "WeFlyForYou" of this web forum in Spearfish, SD at one stop (aviation is a small and close community, as is sc.org) I arrived at the Cub's (and my) new home in SW Montana.

The seven hour flight seemed to me a good omen for me and this airplane, with ten to fifteen knot tailwinds the entire route, and great weather.

So, having begun my aircraft ownership thirty four years ago in a Cub, I now seem to have come full circle.

And I feel truly blessed to have this opportunity.

That's a nice plane Mike and I'm sure you're going to enjoy the heck out of it.

Good for you Mike. PA-11s are hard to come by apparently. I now have a J3 rebuilt and powered like I want and thinking of retiring the old Super Cub.
BTW, I was a New Philadelphia (KPHD), OH Ohio Bush Plane gathering last weekend and met a local who retired from the Fish & Wildlife in AK after 31 years. His and wife's name is Don and Bev Frickie. They said they know you! He said he sold his cub to a Chris Dow. He sure had a soft spot for the cubs at PHD. I didn't ask him for any incriminating stories about you!

Just what you were looking for Mike and it sounds like a nice clean PA11. How about a picture?

And a tail wind headed west, not too common.

Did you sell the 170 yet?

And welcome back to Montana.

Congratulations on your redesigned life, Mike! Don't be a stranger around here, either. And it's good to hear that Dave Tunge is still alive and well - haven't seen him in ages.

Anne.

Congrats Mike,

I will look you up next time through Bozeman. I have friends that live there. I occasionally stop by Bozeman when flying my cub to and from Polson Mt.

Wendy,

Anonymous is good. I was getting a checkup at the clinic the other day, and being a newbie there, the receptionist asked me if I minded if she took my picture for their files. I responded "I'm in the witless protection program....no photos please" She didn't get it, but the lady sitting one station down shot coffee out her nose.

Anonymous is good sometimes. This one does have big tail numbers, though. And, it's not Cub yellow...I've done Cub yellow, time for something different.

Mike:
the way I see it is the more red and white cubs flying around our part of the country, the more I can get away with! Just kidding . Glad you had a great trip and it looks like a nice ride.
