Are guys/gals happy with the B&C alternator?

am in the market for one and am replacing the generator upon overhaul of O-320 on a cub. i know that B&C came out with the STC but it is more expensive that way. can one buy the L-40 with regulator and get a field approval? i know those have slowed but are they nonexistent or can a guy get one in this case? thanx for info.

I installed a 40 on my cub and am very pleased with it. I have installed 20s, and have a neighbor with an 8 amp. Not a complaint from any.
I also recently received great customer service from the B&C company on some troubleshooting.
They are the best in the market in my opinion, and the lightest.
All installations were field approvals, I thought they got the 40 STC'd by now?

B&C has the best on the market, to my knowledge, customer service has been excellent. We installed the SD20, as our main alternator, and it is performing great (so far). If it ever has problems I have no doubt that B&C will back up their product.

I've have had their 40 amp alternator and their LR3 regulator on an O-320 in my experimental pacer for about 12 years -- an excellent product. A few years ago, I was having an electrical problem and had decided that it must be the regulator. I gave them a call and talked to the owner himself, Bill, who talked me out of replacing the regulator. He spent time with me and gave some additional trouble shooting tips. Sure enough, I found the problem elsewhere. I was impressed. I would definitely buy from them again.

Can't go wrong with B&C. I have been running their Starters and Alternators for 20+ years and have not had a single problem. I bought a used B&C Starter that had been submerged in salt water and was completly locked up and shorted out and Bill overhauled it to like new for just over 200.00 a few years back.
They get my vote every time, might be cheaper ones that work OK out there but these are by far the best.

B&C has great customer service. To answer your question about the STC, The FAA does not like to give field approvals on things that already has an STC on.

I personally own & fly B&C alternators , & highly recommend them as a mechanic that specializes in Supercubs, but hey guys don't turn your noses up at Plane power , they got a great kit that's Easy to install & a heck of alot cheaper. B&C does have a great product support you can't beat!

exactly, they are NOT supposed to give a field approval if STC exists that covers it... or the manufactures would not spend the BIG bucks it takes them to get the STC & PMA....

well worth the money, and B&C Alternators are all I install...

Plane Power

I have used Plane power and B&C, I like both. I know the Plane power people personaly, good folks.

I have two reasons for supporting B&C:

1. The alternator works great
2. Bill at B&C was majorly hassled by the FAA several years ago (in AK if I recall correctly), he stood up to them and stood behind his product. He is a quality person.

Ditto on the (+) for B&C. Bill is a stand-up guy, and his products top notch.

B&C Starter and ALternator on both of my certified cubs. Perform perfectly. And Bill the owner is one of the "good Guys". If you want to keep your oil cooler up front, Atlee Dodge has STC'd brackets specifically for the B&C Starter and Alternator. (I believe the B&C Starter normally requires a rear mounted oil cooler)

My new alternator arrived yesterday. One thing you might ask B&C about if your NOT running their starter, part no 403-201 which ties the alt. mount bracket to your starter. Not part of the kit and is required. It seems to me it should be included or brought to your attention when you check that drop down box "starter-other" on the B&C site but is not, or perhaps it depends on what starter you have, I have not talked to them yet. Anyway, a couple of CB's and a little wire and I'll have amps again. Jim

After re-reading the instructions, alt. bracket #403-201 is an entirely different bracket for use with other than a B&C starter so I am delayed a few days. Be sure of which one you need, 403-200 or 403-201, and which one you have on order. Jim

Pretty old thread but it’s better to add on here than to start a new.

Just wanted to give more kudos.

A member was selling a B&C rear mount alternator and so I pulled the drawings offline to see if it would fit behind my IO360. Decent dimensions but not really a 3d model and therefore had some questions about the diameter at certain station points.

Called up B&C and spoke to someone about getting more specific info. He said he didn’t have a CAD model or more specific dimensions that he could send me….but how about he just send me a complete housing to check fitment for say, a couple weeks? Weeks? Hahaha. How about one day?

It’s too good to be true so of course you start laughing. Wait now, do you live on the same planet as other aviation vendors? First you answer the phone, and now you’re offering to send me a real mock-up just to verify it will fit? Sign me up!!

Sure enough, a few days later a box arrives from B&C with a core-less alternator housing, and an invoice stating “no charge, on loan for 30 days for fitment”.
Twenty minutes later I find there’s more room than I even expected and I’ve already boxed it back up for return shipment.

With one gesture and a small investment in shipping, he just secured me as a long term customer. Well done B&C, well done.

8 amp here, no problems, works great!
"Adjustments" had to be made to fit my bird but no worries.

The 8 amp gen is nice, I am trying the monkworx on the next build though, super tight clearance and the B&C ones I am used to will not fit but I need more than 8 amps.

A data point, B & C offer several alternators for the vacuum pad. The 8A alternator is one product. The one Farmboy shows has output much higher than 8A. Likely 20+ amps. 40A? I've held both, have installed the 8A B & C product.

Also held the Monkworx and talked with the design/fabricator. Its smaller, by a lot. The space issues commonly dealt with on this part of engine is depth between the drive pad and the firewall, and diameter of the altenator. The diameter of the altenator will infringe on the oil filter space. So a fix is in place to move the oil filter out of the way.

Round about way to saying the Monkworkx fits real nice. Its new and getting field more hours of in field testing every day. I'm 95% confident that A stock Lycoming (aka Donldson) oil filter pad and a standard Tempest/champion oil filter will co-exist with a Monkworkx alternator. It wont with any B & C alternator.

I have had a terrific experience with B&C. First, I put their alternator on my PA18 many, many moons ago and it has never failed. Second, I put their backup alternator on my CT210 (required when I put on the TKS system to be certified for flight in known ice) and it, too, has been a very reassuring backup (have had multiple primary alternator failures on that aircraft over the last 15 years).

When Bill Bainbridge passed away his son, I believe, took over and carried on the honorable tradition of his father. I recommend their products, and their company, without reservation!

I’m using the 410, which is listed as a 20-40A output. At cruise rpm’s of 2300-2400 I’m expecting 28-30A output.

TJ fixes me up when I need a starter. First time through he guided me through the “cutting the pilot off” process.

Currently running three starters, no problem, and one SkyTek that has endured two round trips to the factory, and two more shear pins.

Speaking of clearances, does anyone know of a shorter filter to run on a o320 pa18 setup so you can run the stock lycoming donaldson (cheap) filter base?

I think I may have been the first one to install a B&C with a FA back in 2000. Had to send it back because the
B+ terminal was barely touching the exhaust manifold. Bill had it repositioned and returned. Still working today
pushing 2300 hrs.
Another thumbs up for B&C.

Attached.
Including wires, if you have a swing out mount, you need 6-3/8”. Or maybe a right angle connector.

To pull the wires you need 7”. I think the other model (462?) is slightly shorter.
