Another Super Cub seat thread........

Searched the forums and read all the older posts about who was offering a nice seating option for a Super Cub. Getting to the point where I need to order them for my Javron build and thought I'd see if there have been any newer recommendations or offerings. Appreciate any input positive or negative.

My Oregon Aero is going on 20 yrs. now........can still sit all day in comfort.

I too badly need a good seat. Is Oregon Aero's seat as light as a std cub seat? Can they replicate my std seat plus my booster back and bottom? What about cost are we looking at?

Sport aircraft seats are really nice and comfy, and you don’t have to send your frames like Oregon aero, and they ship really quick.

OA seats are definitely heavier than the stock covers but are amazingly comfortable. They can do whatever you want. I have a thicker bottom cushion(s) with thinner backs with a lumbar support plus a zippered notebook pouch on the back of the front (folding) seat back all finished in leather with a few special touches. I also had them make a 1"x 1" x 8" leather "forearm pad" for the top of the throttle cover which is the bomb on longer flights.

I never had to send my frames years ago........what changed? I ordered mine with a small front pocket and 2 zippered pockets in the back. I'm short so added a multi-layered hi-tech foam from www.seatfoam.com that was started by Jim Fix......I think Janice is still selling from Crete, NE.

Didn’t they get spanked for selling “aircraft parts” without a PMA?

Fine Line and Sport Aircraft are both good. Both can send what you need for easy installation on the seat frames. Both owners have Cubs.

Appreciate the recommendations. Will start calling around and see what delivery and cost looks like. Keep the suggestions coming if there are more out there.

I'll probably post my outcome and what I find from each vendor to update the topic for new builders and restorations.

Fineline in Anchorage. They have done many Cub seats and don’t need the frames. Wonderful customer service.

I recently purchased a front and back 2 tone cloth seat set for my PA-18 from Sport Aircraft Seats. From order to delivery about 6 weeks as advertised and just received last week.

I would highly recommend based on the one hour of butt time I have on them thus far and the customer service I received from Daniel. He returned calls promptly and answered all of my questions very thoroughly. Even though they are pretty much plug and play (no frames need to be sent, so no downtime), no 2 cubs are truly alike so just wanted to make sure everything would work and fit well prior to dropping some coin. Leather, fabric, different foam thickness options and a well organized and designed website to order through all made the process very streamlined. Not all small aviation manufacturers or vendors take the time to have a good looking website, so kudos to them for that.. I'm sure it allows them to produce their product and get it in the hands of customers more efficiently, rather than all day long disruptions.

Big recommend here.

Oregon Aero started producing Super Cub seat cushion sets many facades ago. I’d flown one of our Cubs with their cushions, and after seven hours in that seat in one day, I was sold.
When we bought the first Husky, I asked them to sell a SC seat to put in the Husky….I’d tried the SC set in the Husky, and it was close enough.
I called OA and talked to the owner. The Husky seats were fixed, so couldn’t send, but wouldn’t have anyway. I explained that the SC cushion set was close enough. He told me he’d call back.

Two days later, he called and said he’d got the seat dimensions from Aviat and would send me a cushion set shortly. He did, and it was magnificent. Virtually every Husky built since has come equipped with an OA seat set.

Theres a huge difference between sitting in a seat for an hour and doing so for eight hours. Also, OA’s seats are designed (and tested) to protect your spine in an ugly “arrival”. Military uses some of their cushion sets in ejection seat aircraft to protect the pilots spine during an ejection sequence.

Think about that.

My last airplane had an Oregon Aero seat, as does my current ride.

We added heated seat pads to the last Husky I flew, with Oregipon Aero cushions. Maintenance installed switched and breaker protected outlets on the seat frames. Seat heaters from auto supply store bonded to cushion, and plugged in.

At minus 40…..nothing finer.

Looks like a bunch of love for Oregon Aero. I had them in my Husky and they were nice. Just heard from them on some seat options for a Super Cub. Per their price quote looks like front and rear seats in leather with no options are now $6032 plus tax and shipping. Fabric would run $4745.

Not sure I can stomach that.

I just talked to Daniel from Sport Aircraft Seats when walking by his shop. He’s there. He says his new website is 1000% better than the old, too.

Are there FAA restrictions for seat foam and fabric? Can any non-aviation fabric shop use "space foam" and a fire proof fabric to customize your seats? Seems like a minor mod.

CAR-3 interior materials need to be “flash resistant” unless smoking is allowed, and then they must be “flame resistant.”

§ 3.388 Fire precautions—(a) Cabin interiors. Only materials which are flash- resistant shall be used. In compartments where smoking is to be permitted, the materials of the cabin lining, floors, upholstery, and furnishings shall be flame-resistant. Such compartments shall be equipped with an adequate number of self- contained ash trays. All other compartments shall be placarded against smoking.

Go fly around in the front seat of a J3 for a few hours. After that " any " seat in a SC will feel like heaven.
Repeat when you feel the need to blow thousands on a seat cushion

Cub seats are so simple. There’s no reason for any Cub seat to be uncomfortable.

Acroeric, My bottom seat cushions snap onto the seat base. I prefer a piece of aluminum under the bottom cushion. The back cushion has a sewn-in pocket and slips on. I’ve omitted to snaps on the two Cubs I’ve had to let the back cushion slide up when the seat back hinges forward. Otherwise they stay put with no retention. I don’t know what the velour-type fabric is that Fine Line uses but I’ve never wanted for anything different in my planes. Sport Aircraft makes good stuff, too. I’m not familiar with how their cushions are constructed or installed. My Cessna seats are upholstered. That is, the upholstery is permanently installed. My Cub seat cushions come off and go back onto the frames in a few seconds, literally.

I bought a helicopter that had Roho seat cushions in it, and after my first time flying it for a full day, I was sold on them. Within a couple weeks I had removed all the Oregon Aero and Fine Line seats I had in my other planes and helos and sold them. I’ve flown plenty of long shifts sitting on Roho’s now and I don’t miss the overprized aviation seats. Seems like most MD500 pilots get numb toes after 6-7 hours, and these cushions solve that for really long shifts. They don’t require body heat to soften them up in cold weather, and they’re lighter weight than some of the seats they’ve replaced, so they’ll appease the ounce-nazis. I put the 2.25” low profile cushions in the pilot seat of the cubs and my helmet hitting the cross bar overhead isn’t an issue.

I'll second that. Daniel at Sport Aircraft Seats will take good care of you and for a whole lot less $$ than Oregon Aero. I've had both and and very happy with SAS

Does my 1950 PA-18 have j-3 seats? I wonder. I know it has the fewer ribs wing and the j-3 pitot. When did Piper update the seat? How does one tell which one they have?

The two seats are different, and do not even attached to the Airframes in the same manner. If the seat in your super cub is an original type it is a SuperCub seat at least that is the case and the ones I have seen even the PA 11 C is different and an improvement over the J3.

I have fine line seats in my cub. Instead of the full width back we made the back seat back support the same as wide as the front seat, that way if you have a 3rd seat passenger the legs can come forward on each side of the back seat passenger, also helps with longer gear and passenger gets to stuff jackets and water bottle behind them. I had to add a lumbar support to the back of the front seat it really had none and long trips cause a fair amount of back pain. One thing to think about with them big wide bolster front seats is adjusting trim when fully dressed out in winter gear or if you carry with an under the shoulder holster on the left side. Lots of bulk and not much space. I was in local shop when I saw an old cub and noticed the seat cushion was only as wide as the seat! The extra room would really help in winter. If you are a warm weather flyer or don't keep heavy coats on in the winter it really is not that big of a deal but something to consider. I rebuilt my Pacer seats with temper foam and it was a joy to fly for 8 hours in a day. I helped a friend fly a cub back from Minnesota a few years back and the stock front seat was so bad we could only last 2 hours before we had to land and switch seats. As for the seat itself if you make the back folding do not do it like Attlee Dodge, make the hinge point more forward it give the back seat passenger more room to get in and out without busting a shin.

The primary flaw with the SC front seat is the angle between the seat bottom and seat back. Just a lot too close to a 90 degree angle for my long suffering back to tolerate. That said, it’s easy to fix: Install a folding seat mod, but change the stop to permit the seat back to lean aft a bit more. Doesn’t take a lot to make it much more comfortable.

Primary Thing to be careful of in winter gear is if the mag switches are still mounted down beside the seat. With that setup, even with guarded switches, it’s a matter of time before you turn off both mags in flight, while cranking that trim wheel. Do that at 200 feet in a turn and it tends to excite passengers.

not only mag switches but I've bumped the fuel selector where it was in-between tanks with bunny boots. it quit
