ALASKA'S NEWSPAPER
Only in Alaska is this not a big deal. From troopers:
At about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, Alaska State Troopers received a report of an aircraft accident near Mile 137 of the Parks Highway. ... A 1956 PA-14 Piper landed on the Parks Highway, struck a road sign, rolled into the southbound ditch and struck the embankment with the nose of the aircraft.
Kenneth M. Wasche age 43, the pilot, and Koren M. Wasche age 43, the passenger, reported no injuries. Damage to the airplane was estimated at $30,000. Alcohol was not a factor. The landing was executed for emergency reasons.
Say what?
“Supposedly there was a concern regarding fuel, so they landed to check it out," said troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters.
“They were already on the ground when they crashed," she said.
That leg of the Parks Highway is near the southern boundary of Denali State Park, right around the Lower Troublesome Creek campground and Troublesome Creek Bridge, according to The Milepost.
NOTE: For what it's worth, it looks like the Piper was built in 1948, according to FAA records. 1956 was likely an airworthiness date.
