Seal

Is the replaceable seal available only from AOSS, or is it available from another source?

AOSS SEAL

Steve and all,

The seal part number is in the parts listing at the end of the installation, operation and maintenance manual. It can be purchased at any bearing and seal store.

There is a spare seal, retainer and spare screws supplied with each new unit when you receive the new system. (2 seals, 2 retainers, 6 screws)

We do manufacture the retainer ourselves but it is made of .020 aluminum and I see no reason that the owner couldn't fabricate one if needed immediately. The retainer is also $8.00. The screws are 3/8" long stainless steel truss head sheet metal screws; standard aircraft hardware.

Can someone explain the advantages of the AOSS system? I am not trying to be argumentative, I am just interested in learning why it is better than the hydrosorbs and bungees.

AOSS is a dynamic system

The AOSS is a dynamic system in that it works in all load configurations; empty to full. The units offer less impact transmitted to the airframe when you taxi and land.

The AOSS virtually eliminates the "slingshot" effect that one experiences on a hard landing, too. More controlled deflection of the units allows for more time to absorb the ground reactions that the airframe is subjected to and in turn translates to less forces being absorbed by the airframe itself.

The AOSS is also PILOT adjustable in length to take up any landing gear "spread" under heavy loads. This adjustability does not change the active or reactive rates just the length of the units and the shock struts. All the small diameter tubing and fittings are titanium. The check nuts are AN hardware.

The adjustment can be made without jacking the aircraft. The lighter the better but it is not necessary. There is also less than .8 G change from +70 degrees F to -26 degrees F. It also lands softer than the hydrasorb and outperforms the bungees.

AOSS/HydraSorb-Bungee Weights

The AOSS is approximately one (1) lb. heavier (per side) in all applications than the hydrasorb and bungees.

We did not weigh the little speed fairing or cover in that comparison nor did we weigh the super-canvas bags that most pilots use.

You can install the metal covers over the AOSS if you wish to clean them up a bit but so far no one has bothered.
