I recently returned from a great three weeks up in Alaska with Loni Habersetzer (Cubdriver749er). Shaun Lunt joined us from Washington to Wasilla and Alec (KenyaCub) showed up at Marabou Landing a few days before I left. I will be headed back soon for a couple more weeks then bringing my cub home.

Photo's from the trip are posted at www.cubdriver.smugmug.com in the Super Cub Flying gallery.

I live up here, but seldom get to see the transients.

Today I went to "maribou "and then back to Tutna, Nickabuna and Long Lake, down the Chilutna, and to Port Alsworth to pick up friends that had hiked form Maribou to Long lake and then paddled down the river.

If you will just call me on 122.9 , 127.75. 123.45 I'd be glad to share a gulp of coffee. On Channel 10 it is GYPSY WAGON. On the others it is 83Z.

First great day of the year. High Blue and calm.

Spectacular.... great diversion from the computer and those that wish they were there. Ralph

Gary, centmont, OldCuby - Thanks for the comments. Gary, do you live in Port Alsworth? Coffee sounds good. Mark

Mark,

I live about 15 miles NE of Port Alsworth, on the lake. We are just to the North side of the horse shoe shaped island about 5 miles from the pass.

Red and white cub on floats on the beach.

Normally - and soon - you need to be on floats, but now the back cove beach is still good. The coffee is great.

Gary,
I plan on flying my Husky to Alaska in September. I have a question about the route through your neighborhood. When leaving Anchorage it appears best to fly South on the West side of the water and somewhere in the area of Redoubt Bay head a little more SouthWest to go through Lake Clark Pass. My question is: Is there a clear landmark of where to enter the drainage or lower areas leading to the pass? The routing up to this point and beyond appears clear on sectionals etc. It is only the area trying to get to the North end of the pass that doesn't seem too clear. My final destination will be Aleknagik.
Thanks,
Gary Fields

Gary,

The Big River flows right out of the pass. The Big River Lakes are the best landmark. They are on the South side of the entrance to the pass.

You want to be well inland by the time you pass Tyonek.

I'll look at the way points on the GPS and PM you some points and headings before you come.

Best way first time is with someone that is familiar with the pass itself. You just never know about the weather in September.

Good coffee and a guest cabin at out place if you need a break.

Gary Fields----If you are GPS equipped the waypoint I use for the NE entrance to Lake Clark pass is N60 48.3 W152 25.8 The entrance is NW of Redoubt Bay and North of the Big River Lakes. The pass turns to the NW then to the SW a few miles past this waypoint. I generally have flow SW from the Mat-Su valley on the west side of Cook Inlet to the pass. I'm sure Gary can give you some good input also.

Gary Reeves----I believe I can find the area you live, I will give a call on the radio when I am in the area. Look forward to meeting you.

Mark, Gary, All

The GPS thinks the front of the cabin is ;

N 60 21.81

W 153 60

That should get you close enough to see the cub and the cabin.

I monitor most of the standard frequencies

122.9 for the local.

127.75 for Lake Clark Air

123.45 for chatter

BTW

I did meet Lonnie a few years back since he too was an 83Z.

Thanks for the information. I have only flown to Alaska once, it was in a T210, I was trapped by weather in Watson Lake for 2 days, other than that it was quite nice. I left Fort Worth on 9/16/2001, flew the highway to Northway, then to Fairbanks and finally over to Kotzebue. Low and slow in a T210 is equivalent to cruise speed in the Husky!

I have plenty of time to get to Dillingham area. I have an over equipped A1B-200 with 530 and also will carry a 496. If I cannot get through the pass I will stop for coffee!

Thanks again,
Gary

HMMMMM<

Perhaps I did get to see Loni today - or at least a replica.

A friend and I were about to drift the middle Nicabuna lake from inlet to outlet in 83Z to fish off the floats for pike when we saw two aircraft approaching. One came low to the lake and the friend asked me if it was going to land. I mentioned that if it did it would be spectacular since it was on wheels.

Well, I was part right and part wrong. I don't know if skimming at least a half mile or so in somewhat choppy water with a quartering tailwind, is landing, BUT IT WAS SPECTACULAR.

Red and white, belly tank. Big tires that were getting washed off well.

The pike fishing was lousy, but the air show was great.

Finding the mouth to Lake Clark Pass isn't all that hard. I was able to do it my first time just with charts. With a GPS you wont have a problem. It is a beautiful area.

Oh, and cool pictures!

Gary,

Gary,

I flew out in May, and saw your place and Jay Hammonds, I think. Will be back in a few weeks. I don't drink coffee, but if the beach is still open (the east end of the lake was landable back in May), I will drop by.

Bob,

The water has finally come up and we just had a night of rain. My back beach is gone, and from what I saw yesterday the flat beach on the east end of the lake is not usable.

The closest place to land would be Hammond's strip.
