So why would this be an incident, since in AK it's the "norm". :)

Because there was substantial damage - read NTSB 830

Substantial damage means damage or failure which adversely affects
the structural strength, performance, or flight characteristics of the
aircraft, and which would normally require major repair or replacement
of the affected component. Engine failure or damage limited to an engine
if only one engine fails or is damaged, bent fairings or cowling, dented
skin, small punctured holes in the skin or fabric, ground damage to
rotor or propeller blades, and damage to landing gear, wheels, tires,
flaps, engine accessories, brakes, or wingtips are not considered
``substantial damage'' for the purpose of this part.

RC,

Got nothing to do with Alaska.

And, if you didn't fly with some wind in MANY parts of this country, you wouldn't ever fly.

Craig,

It seems that the reporter did not type in much of an event description.

If they would have said hit trees and ripped off wings. Then you would know basically what happened. (just an example, I have no idea what happened)

Substantial damage and striking the bushes would seem to leave room for lots of guess work.

Later, you may get a better report. Maybe...

It may not have been right at Aniak, it may have been out in the booneys some place.

Remember the video of the Maule boo-boo from years ago that happened around there. The report and the video were not exactly aligned...
