470J to 470R

FRIEND
Port Townsend, WA
A guy I know is preparing to swap the 470J in his 54 C180 for a 470R.
I guess since the R isn't listed on the TCDS for the 54, a field approval or STC will be required.
I guess there's some changes to the R required to acomodate the 54 cowl, dual exhaust, & 0751001-1 mount.
An stc should have all the details listed, but otherwise he'll have to figure it all out on his own.

I have the 180/185 Club "club manual" on pdf,
but the index doesn't seem to list this K-to-R swap-out,
and there's literally hundreds of pages to go through.
Does anyone know if this info is in there?
Or have paperwork from this mod detailing the changes required?

Thanks.

For a quick reference first I'd look at the TC. https://drs.faa.gov/browse/TCDSMODEL/doctypeDetails?modalOpened=true See Note 5

The R is the same as the L except for damper configuration.
The L is same as K except for relocated carburetor and revised sump.
The K is similar to the J except...revised mounting brackets.

There are enough differences there to indicate that this is not just an engine swap.

I could not locate an STC on the FAA's STC listing. Perhaps it's there, I couldn't find it.

Exactly, Swapping the J for a K is pretty simple,
but with an R the oil pan & maybe induction become issues.
I think he's buying a new or re-manned engine, apparently he can get a K but it's a lot shorter wait for an R.
Might be worth waiting though.

The 180/185 Club has a sample J-to-R STC they'll sell you for a couple bucks,
but it's a "one time STC" (which seems to me like a field approval, not an STC).
He bought it, apparently it does have some good info, but still leaves some questions unanswered.

One time STCs are issued which are not field approvals. There are more hoops to jump through. I have one for a fuel tank installation. If he has all the data which goes with it, it should place him in a good position to get one for his airplane using the same data. He may need to get permission from the original holder of that STC, not just a copy of the document.

I did an O470R in my 180 using Frank's STC. Pretty straight forward. Have your friend call me if he has any questions.
