26" tires for a PA11

Jan Berghoff

Hello,

I would like to mount some 26" tires on my PA11. I contacted Cubcrafters as I saw they sold the GoodYear 26", however I learned their STC is only for the PA18's. Does anyone sell a 26" tire and STC for a PA11?

Thanks for the help,
Jan

Douten on this site has an stc for bigger tires. Not sure of the size,4 or 6 inch wheel. He just posted on the Northeast ski flying thread.Send him a PM.

The j3s at my field I believe we're done by FA or 337s, I know when I looked into it for my 11 I was told should be an easy approval with Cleveland wheels and brakes. Someone here will be able to give you a more concrete answer

By the time you buy the tires and tubes it's a little more than a $400 differnce for 26" airstreaks.

Alaskan Bushwheels 26, 29 and 31 for a PA-11 if you have PA18 or other heavy duty gear.

Airstreaks are the way to go on a lighter airplane. Everyone that I've know to get them new goes with the 29's and never looks back. The STC Douten has is for the old 25x4's which are hard to find in good shape and are tube tires. I know of a few guys that hoard them. The ak Bushwheel airstreaks are tubeless, are stc'd and require 6" wheels and brakes.(done under there own stc) Bushwheel requires "heavy duty brakes" so sense they are upgraded from 4" drum brakes, would be heavy duty in my eyes.

Late J-3 gear is also PA-18.

All the 26" blimp tires I have seen were by field approval. I would think this would be one of the easier field approvals to get, since so many Cubs use them. You still have to get the STC for Clevelands - I don't believe they are on A-691.

Another way is to check out Grove - I believe Robbie just got an STC for 6:00 wheels with any tire size available. I can probably check - I have to go over there and tell them the Champ conversion works perfectly.

Airstreaks are way lighter and more flexible than the Goodyears. We like the 29" because the addition sidewall allows more flex in the rough stuff. All depends on your mission.

Gotta Agree with this. 29" Airstreeks are the best thing thats happened to our PA-11.

I put 29" AirStreaks on J-3. My cruise speed Increased, compared to the old 25x11x4's. Obviously I did not put them on for the speed increase, that's just as a comparison.

They are a great improved tire.

( Note. 29" airstreaks [made by Alaskan Bush Wheels] are NOT the same 29" BushWheels you'll find on a Helio or C180. They are lighter etc. )

Interesting. Say you are just going to do this for appearance, and do not plan on operating on surfaces requiring more than an 8:00. And you are on a budget. Which tire is the most appearance bang for the buck?

29"s look better, land better, cost a few hundred more and weigh 4-6 lbs more than 26." From memory - the 26s are 4 inches larger in diameter than 8.00s. I believe they will elongate the takeoff roll slightly - but the extra cushion is fantastic IMO - and to me they are more than for vanity's sake. But beating back the ladies with a stick doesn't suck either.

I had 26" Airstreaks on my experimental for several hundred hours, and then I maned up and got the biggest I could, the 29" Airstreaks. I was a little surprised how much more cushy the 29's were, bigger around, yes, but also wider. End result LOTS of more cushy air in them.

The new Grove wheels are only approved through the 26" size. I assume when you buy the Bushwheels you get the STC?

Correct. You can also call up airframes Alaska and get an STC if you buy a used set from someone. I'm not sure if they charge since the company was bought out by AA.

My J-3 came with 26 Bushwheels, just flipped them to get a little more life out of them. I only have about 14 solo hours, hate to burn a new set doing touch and go's, might pick up a set of 8.50's for pavement/good gravel strip work. Next big set will probably be Airstreaks, get to either save 10lbs sticking with 26 or go to 29 at the same weight. Know I need a lot more practice before getting off airport but that's the goal.

Ive got couple field approvals for 26 gy on PA11s using data from the PA18 stc. Not my first choice of tires for a 11 but if thats what you got for free might as well use them.
