26 inch Goodyears on J-3/Pa-11

Is there an STC out there that covers putting 26 inch Goodyears on a J-3 or PA-11.
My 90 horse J-3C/ Atlee Dodge conversion to PA-11 works great with them mounted on 6 inch Clevelands and supercub type hyrashock gear legs.

BUT, I have to find some way to make them legal.

I have the same question re both my PA-12 and my J-3. I've currently got 8.50x6 on the 12, but would like to switch to 26" Goodyears on both planes. What is currently the 'best' source for the tires?

I'd agree with the last point. I had a 90 hp J-3, and ran the old Goodyear 25 X 4 Airwheels on it. Those were nearly perfect tires on that airplane for beaches. Don't know what they weighed, but the Goodyear 26's are heavy.

I'd be very doubtful if there are any stc's for this installation. You'll have to go to the FSDO and snivel for a field approval, which should be doable. They are relatively painless for tire installations in Alaska recently. But I'd do it before it goes the other way.

If you fill out the tundra tire worksheet and take care of all the parameters the FSDO will stamp that approved with a smile on their faces. That is a national document that works in Texas, Washington D.C. as well as Alaska.

337?

If I understand correctly the new field approval process requires an approval from the fsdo before the work is actually done. How do you fill out the tundra tire worksheet before the tires are approved?
thanks,
Jesse

Especially since it has to be test flown.

Which I have done....Lots

I only have a crummy copy of the tundra tire form.

Plus I only have one page. Is there more???

I have been told that the field approval process has always required approval before the modification takes place, but was seldom followed.

It makes me wonder also about tundra tire approvals with test flights, how do you fill out the 337 stating compliance with the tundra tire worksheet when you can't install the tires untill you get your paperwork approved?? Can anyone that has done this explain the sequence??

Please explain,
How do you put it on a Special Airworthiness Cert. Would a record of that show up in the FAA records for that aircraft? Nothing to that effect was listed on the records CD from the FAA in my example.

Compliance

It's called (experimental) to prove compliance with the FAR's. I've been in it six times now to get field mods. Have to do it again in August. You make a list of the test's you want to do, and if they approve you go into exp. And, you also do the test's that they want you to do. It has an area that you have to stay in, and time limit. Your FISDO knows the routine. Jerry. :)

So I fill out the 337 for the tires, make a list of the flight tests needed to satisfy the Tundra tire worksheet. Submit to the FAA and if I get the nod, roll to Exp. then fly the tests, complete the worksheet (test results) submit back the the FAA and roll back off the Exp. airworthiness? Sequence right? I want to have a good idea what I think I am doing before I go visit the FAA, they often seem busy and prefer if stuff is filled out right for them the first time.

Thanks,

Carlon

Tests

Carlon. They may have some additional tests they will add on to your test list. You should also add as much backup info to your paperwork that you can. Other 337's, pictures, ect. They always want to be assured that this isn't the first time the mod has been done. The people you deal with have probably never heard of a Cub, keep that in mind. The one that I am currently working on will have videos, still picts, detailed drawings, blueprints and complete history of the mod, both on CD and hard copy. That's just to get into exp. Our member in Yankton will attest to the fact that a mod that I did not too long ago, was at one time completed on 1 1/2 lines of handwritten text on a 337. It took me 17 pages typewritten to do the same thing. But I'm not complaining. At least we can still get them done. Jerry. :)
