Where did you fly today?

I got some T-Craft time......using the scaffold plank I made years ago from the non-airworthy rear spars, to do some flashing work on top the HydroSwing hangar door. The main spars are "still in service" also, as sawhorse legs. As are several smaller bits and pieces in the RANS, one in particular that serves as my arm rest when I fly with the window open, still building time!

I just realized my RANS S-7S now has 10 more hours TT than my T-Craft did when I bought it, 2744 hrs. I find that significant for some reason, but I also just realized I put 117 more hours on the T-Craft, so I have another 90 to go with the 7 to equal the much older planes time. The previous owners of the T were slackers.

No flying, but rather a live webinar at Maddens for MSPA and AOPA on amphib safety and the impossible turn. It was 45 deg and wind howling out of the east through the open air venue. The wind shot heat out the fireplace to the west, so there was a lot gathering at this spot!

Windy day in the mountains. Cruise speed ranged from 52-108 ktas. When they say avoid flying in the mountains with ridge top winds above 20kts that is good advice. Keeping a huge safety margin kept things tranquilo. The three condors we saw weren't bothered by the winds at all. Looked like Mom and Dad were giving Jr. some dual.20210528_082848.jpeg20210528_084955.jpeg

Last week poking around Tuxedni Bay after clam digging. Met some nice folks based out of Settlers Bay Strip (sorry forgot your names) and enjoyed the sun. Nice to have my kid fly me around for a change.

I'm curious as to your choice of a three blade prop? Was there a particular reason or did you just want to try one? Did you find any particular advantages or disadvantages? How much horsepower are you harnessing with it? Noise level?

This Cub is an experimental “Monster Cub” with a Lycoming YIO-390 Thunderbolt engine which puts out 218 to 225 per Lycoming. I will post a more detailed answer in a thread for this build. I’m am gathering avionics to redo the panel currently as what I put in has seriously under performed with a second dark screen episode on this trip. Lake Clark Air saved the day with a loaner battery in Port Alsworth on the way home. (Thank you Dennis!!!)

4 hr flight to Trigger Gap. Very nice place. Also stopped at Carrol County for fuel. We will be back again.

Lite Cub, did you have backup with Foreflight or something else? I had that happen once and had to get the sectional out. What a pain.

NoFlaps, what state is Tigger Gap in?

Here is a clip from last Friday that the patient's family member shot on a cell phone. This strip is a natural and works in most wind conditions. I'm landing south even though the winds aloft are from the north at 30 kts.

Only a pilot from Colorado would call the range east of Afton, hills!

Mounds? Bumps? Look tiny to me too! :D

(So glad you are back in the air Dave! Your route back is how I always sneak back home too in my 11, and we use a similar approach to get to Grand Junction when the weather is questionable...)

That was funny. Here is photo from my deck in Evergreen Colorado at around 7,800' elevation. So I have been looking at mountain tops which are usually snow covered. The mountains around Afton all have grass on them! :)

vs some Afton hills from the Aviat parking lot...

Afton Mountains.jpg
Your right! The hills are actually mountains at 10K feet plus. Not use to mountains being green...

Collecting a few balls and cool stuff from the Bristol Bay. While not as plentiful as in the past (at least in northern part of bay) pic was the first days haul. The next day we got about 300. Lake Clark pass was nice too!

Certainly looks cool, but could you help a prairie kid out? What are those and why are they collectible?

I did a search for "blue balls Bristol Bay" and came up with what you might expect--it had nothing to do with what you've shown. ;)

LMAO! I dumped them in a sink and started washing them…….friggin adult son had a heyday with “ball washer” comments. Lots of people think any glass fishing float is of Japanese origin. Truth is many countries used them and not all are vintage floats (balls) some were used well into the 70’s and later made ones have synthetic webbing. I believe Norway was the first to use glass fishing floats.

Anyway, I kinda find those balls cool and can’t leave any behind. Lotta balls!
