What was I thinking

Part of me feels like a kid who coaxed 2 puppies home after school and ask mom if I could keep them. Another part of me feels like I did a civil service saving two old icons from being crushed by accumulating dusk. But most of me feels like I'm living in an episode of Storage Wars and I'm still trying to assess what I have done.

Last week I closed on a deal to buy a 1946 Piper 65hp J3-the yellow one and a 1946 65hp Taylorcraft BC12, and a hangar, and all of the aviation stuff and tools in it. Because everyone should own 3 1946 airplanes.

I flew the J3 today, from the rear seat and had a ball, coincidentally on its exact 77th birthday. It's sometimes hard to explain crazy. But also cool the J3 has spent its entire life in Montana.

Very sweet. You are the beneficiary of some great artifacts that are more than just something to look at. You can defy gravity. I am constantly amazed that these machines we enjoy were made before we were born. If we don't show great gratitude, we are not worthy of the experience.

Why have three? Can't afford four.

I used to rent a J3 for $11 an hour wet. Wanted to buy one but couldn’t afford it in 1974 so I bought a 46 T-Craft. Next best thing. Not as much fun but it went faster and my wife could sit next to me. Later I restored the T-Craft. Bought a J3 and enjoyed it for years. Sold it to friends 20 years ago and they still have it in a hangar behind mine.

I have had several airplanes since then. I still miss the simplicity of those planes. I flew all over the Northeast with nothing but a compass, a sectional and a watch. Enjoy your new old planes!
