Sutton exhaust install question - usage of Walker exhaust cement

I wanted to get the consensus on the usage of walker acoustiseal (exhaust cement puddy) when installing the Sutton exhaust. It seems some A&Ps are against using exhaust cement and omit it on the install and just use the clamps to secure the exhaust to the risers.

The Sutton instructions state “apply muffler assembly to risers. Apply approved sealant (walker exhaust cement) around muffler to riser joints.”

So I want to know what others have done who installed the exhaust. The explanation given to me was it’s messy and if you need to remove the exhaust, it’s a pain to deal with and then needs ground off, and makes re-assembly difficult, etc.

I’m interested in others thoughts. By not doing it, you’ll have an exhaust leak at all 4 joints, so what is everyone doing? My opinion is, it seems pretty simplistic to put a bead of exhaust cement aroudn the joint, put the bead clamp over it, and torque while it dries, per the instructions.

    thoughts?

Mine was installed without the cement, it leaked. I took it apart and installed the sealant, no more leaks. What I used was not cement, but a heat activated expanding sealant of some sort. Next time I'm in the hangar I'll get the name. The stuff works great and comes apart easily if you need to take it off.

This sounds like good stuff to use around the EGT probes since they like to leak too.

Google seems to tell me taber flo-ex is only sold direct by taber. Seems like a very interesting product. I especially like it’s heat expanded qualities.

I just completed the install with flo-ex. Very easy to work with and the 2 oz bottle will go a long ways. You literally just “paint” it on with the dauber, it sets up pretty quick, and then install and tighten the clamps. I’ll flight check it tonite or tomorrow.

All in all, I like this product better then the typical exhaust cement from the auto parts store.

I use the Acoustic Seal, never had an issue either with it making a mess or being hard to remove. I put a nice bead, I don't bathe the part in it.

So this gets used on the header to head connection, or are you talking about slip joints too?

    Thanks

I use it on the slip joints. Have used a little to hold the exhaust gasket to the cylinder head when installing the system.

Correct, this cement is used where the exhaust mates up to the riser only and then is clamped together.

I went and flew her today and no exhaust leaks. All in all, I’m happy with it at this juncture. Thanks again for the info everyone.
