    ICOM 210 problems

Having problems with my Icom 210 radio.
It is about 10 years old and has been sent back for repair twice due to bad ribbon to front panel. Works fine and transmits/receives well but two weeks ago It just flickered and showed one frequency on screen and locked up. I turned it off and then back on at that point all it showed was the icon table and 1.63.001 below that. I pulled it out and put my buddies radio in and that worked fine. Sent mine to ICOM. 6 flying hours the second radio did the same thing!!
Voltage is showing a rock solid 14.5 on EI gauge with no problems on other instruments. My buddy gets a rebuilt radio out of the deal but I am getting fed up with having the radio go bad every 5 years. I am thinking of just sticking in a Garmin so I don't have to mess with it any more. Anybody have input/troubleshooting airframe advice.

It's the radio. The last decent one that Icom made for aviation was the -A200.

    Hey Doc

Was this wired for the A210 or was it wired for something else originally? You should be able to put a KY97A in that tray but the backlighting might not work, depending on the connections.

I have a Narco 810R that is acting up. I am going to slam a GTR-200 in there and never look back. I could probably get it repaired for $2-300, but this is quicker.

I think the tray was originally for a KY97A I am not sure if we changed it out when we did the panel. Icom is going to call my tomorrow and let me know what the problem was. I have my handheld I can run as a backup just got to figure out how to use it. DENNY

Throw the KY97A back in. It may not look fancy but it's a much better quality radio.

A friend has an A210 installed in his Cub. 3 years ago in the fall it got stuck on a WX channel. He doesn't like tech stuff so I downloaded the manual, couldn't find anything in it to address the issue. I called tech support, and they suggested reseating the ribbon cable to the display. It was a little tricky, I didn't enjoy doing it, but it seemed to fix it. Then the next summer, 2 years ago, it did the same thing again, but stuck on the boot up screen. I tried reseating the ribbon cable again, no joy. I thought it might be some strange combo of 2 buttons that got pushed, so I tried everything. Still nothing. Called tech support, they said to return it. So I mailed it to them. They emailed me when they received it. Then I heard nothing for 5 weeks. There was a phone number in the email, so I called it. Just a robot with no opportunity to leave a message. Then I received an email the following day that it was shipped back with tracking. I think that it was $250, they had to replace the display, no explanation of cause. Not that impressed. But it is still working...

I got the radio back today. The frequency flip flop switch was bad. Overall happy with how fast the turnaround was. 208.94 for parts/labor/shipping.

Less than 2 weeks turnaround is awesome, esp these days.
And the price wasn't bad either.
