    Oil dip stick

I have an O290-D with standard dip stick and tube. I noticed the same engine that had a much shorter tube and dip stick. I can't find this option in the Lycoming parts manual, was wondering if it is legally available or did someone just modify it.

May or may not be related but my YIO-360 has a 2 part dipstick tube comprising of one long section and one short section. I wonder if the pictured tube is that short section. It's easy to make a dipstick shorter.

Caution - any question about how to calibrate the shorter dipsick will result in a discussion of whether the dipstick should indicate the quantity of oil in the sump or the quantity of oil in the engine.

The really short ones screw directly into the case without even that short tube.

Those are pressed in if memory serves me correctly. I know of some that were replaced and PRC was used to seal the tube to the case.

No flats to wrench it in, no safety wire? It must be pressed in. I wouldn’t mess with it. You need a funnel with the longer tube, too. Buy a longer funnel and leave it alone. If you think the case is threaded and want a longer tube? I have a Lycoming tube and dipstick on the shelf. I had to change mine for the Superior sump.

I had only heard of, and seen, threaded dipstick/filler tubes but found the answer in post 5 of this thread -

    https://www.supercub.org/forum/showt...il-tube-length

These seem to be several different lengths of threaded filler tubes but that won't help if the crankcase is not threaded.

Unthreaded filler tubes are available NOS and used on eBay. I didn't find one as short as shown in the orginal post but they should be easy to shorten to taste. E.g.

My O-235 has no tube, just screws right into the case.

Your memory is correct. I have an O-290-D originally out of a SuperCub apart in the hangar for overhaul now. This one is pressed in.
