    Good article on grease

Note: Mobil SHC100, which is now my favored grease for the cold and wet of AK due to easy availability and good performance, is now made in 14 oz tubes. Like Aeroshell 22 (another good grease), proven effective down to -54C. Wheel bearings get extremely cold in interior winter flights, then are expected to immediately turn with little resistance upon landing. Using the right grease in this case does make a difference.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but it is better if everything that needs it gets the proper grease before it begins to squeak. If you consistently use the correct lubricant for your airplane’s various parts, you will go a long way toward preventing problems that could leave you stranded…. https://www.kitplanes.com/grease-is-...2023%2F01%2F26

I have been using Aeroshell 22 for a while now covers most every situation. It really helps tailwheel motion when it is past -0 out. I buy it in the tube, you can just pull the cap off and use it like a can to get a hand full and cut the tube down as you go. I now dedicated a grease gun to the grease. I used to use pretty much whatever was on the shelf in the shop then one winter I noticed how my tailwheel would not want to pivot as easy so actually did some reading and found the answer.

Ive been using mobil 1 synthetic on my build on everything that doesnt call for a specific grease such as the hartzell trailblazer. Anyone have any supported thoughts on mobil 1 vs mobil shc100? I have to think if mobil 1 is good enough for trailer bearings meant to haul loads at continuous highway speeds surely it is good enough to lubricate a jackscrew and bushwheel bearings? I use this grease on everything else i own and would like to minimize the number of different greases i stock.

I downloaded the Mobil product data sheets below for SHC 100 and Mobil 1. They are very similar in composition and performance. The Mobil 1 lists a lower water washout loss (3%) vs 6% for the SHC 100 per ASTM D1264, and a higher 4-ball weld point (300 kgf) vs 250 for the SHC 100 per ASTM D2596. I've used both and would choose one over the other based only upon availability.

I think Bill Rusk wrote about this TRC 880 grease he used with some success. I like it as well and bought a case to use on machinery and bearings. I like it but I’m open to others opinions as well. Any thoughts?

Interesting. I thought the Aeroshell 22 was terrible on amphibious float wheel bearings. It very quickly became an emulsified mess and the bearings were shot after one season. I have had much better success (at least in this one application) with the TRC Grease.

KJC - Thanks for the link. I need to order another case.

I used AS 22 for a few years due to its cold weather performance. After replacing all the tailwheel bearings last summer from corrosion, I'm testing another product SHC 100. TRC 880 has a good rep here for construction equipment and boat trailer wheel bearings.

I have always used Aeroshell 5 for general greasing. It works well south of the frozen wastelands. Aeroshell anything is damned near impossible to get anymore without paying extortion prices, so I started using Mobilgrease 28. It's a bit thinner than I expected, but seems to be working okay. As an experiment, about six months ago I mixed some Mobil 28 and Aeroshell 5 to see what happens. Nothing much, it turns out. Still feels like grease.

Green Grease is approved by Wipline, so we've been using it. It makes a snotty mess, but is available at O'reilly's auto and is cheap enough you don't feel bad pumping some every time you get wet.
