I realize that I’m missing something obvious, but why isn’t the shroud and the air box lining up? I didn’t take it apart, but from the looks of the scat tube it was rigged this way previously. Muffler and shrouds are correct. (0-235 pipes for a square air box??)

Just to move this back to the top before I go throwing $1000 bills at the problem, does anyone have any ideas?

Can't help you with a better way to fix it but I have seen many that way. Always been able to get a piece of ducting on it and didn't need clamps.

I can't account for the obvious gross misalignment. To make it work without spending $$$$$ I would cut back both of the tubes so that there was only about 5/8" being projected. Then install the scat tube with hose worn screw clamps. It's hard to tell when looking at the pictures but it does appear you will be able to gain enough room for a satisfactory S turn in the scat tube. Won't be pretty but should be functional.

Maybe cut a V-notch in the top of the airbox inlet and reweld it facing more up towards the muffler outlet?

Gary

I would suspect that right exhaust pipe has been repaired and is a bit high where it meets the muffler. That diamond patch is not original. I would try another pipe and see what that does to your alignment.

But Steve, that is the shroud which does not line up. Isn't that shroud part of the shroud which surrounds the muffler? Therefor is fixed in location?

If the pipe is misaligned to far up that would move the muffler up and that shroud which wraps around the muffler.

It’s definitely a weird one. When I put it together everything lined up perfectly on the exhaust studs. The muffler is nice and parallel to the mount and the height of the pipes is symmetrical on both sides. Everything looked perfect until I put the carb air box on and the the swear words came out. Piper made different pipes for the smaller 0-235 and the 0-290/320. Here is a screenshot from Aerospace Welding which seems to match the parts book:

These pipes are in good shape and I don’t think they have ever been repaired. Here is a shot of someone else’s plane with the diamond patches and mine:

Soo…. Maybe the pipes for an 0-235 and it’s common to see them just get reused and cobbled together when installing the 0-320? I’m still not sure. The perfectionist in me hates to cut and cobble it especially on a rebuild. I called Aerospace Welding and they said bring them down to measure.

Is that someone else's airplane where you can compare the two with a tape measure?

The bottom of the carb heat shroud appears to be at the same location in both planes when compared to the engine mount firewall fitting.

It's beginning to look to me as though there may be a difference in height of the oil sumps between the engines. Is this possible? Wrong carburetor, too much height? Look at the intake pipes..... they are different shapes between the two airplanes.

It’s an 0-320A2B wide deck with a new -32 carb. I think the intake pipes on the motor are the same, but the exhaust pipes are an inch too short at the flange where they mount to the cylinders. Also different curvature near the flanges.

I have one the same way, a short piece of scat hose will fix it.
