It was. We had a fantastic day there in July 2018. The evening……Less so much.

Wish I could have gotten the shot without so much in the background. But sometimes you gotta work with what you are given.

    Pretty magical place.

That shot is calendar worthy! (with the other aircraft's nose cropped out of the frame.)

…and you meet some of the most interesting folks in AK as well. Even some that bring their violins from Australia.

Feet don't fail me now !! That has the potential for an absolute disaster. Though I'm surprised neither of the sows appear agitated. All it would take is one cub to start squalling and you'd see a nuclear bomb go off.

I was using a very long lens.

Those sows were eyeing each other up continuously. I could easily see how this could blow up.

For those that haven’t ever been here, the number and proximity of the bears is truly indescribable. I would visit again in a heartbeat.

I've flown to that beach a few times. It can get interesting with all that traffic. They like to crawl up on the plane, especially if there's been any fish recently stored in the floats. Great place to view bears and fish.

One of my interests is Beringian Archaeology. Here's a story about some of the early occupants of the Brooks River Camp area.

Is that airplane tailed up to the beach on page 4 what I think it is? A Cessna T-50 "Bamboo Bomber"? I can't see the engines, but the rest of it looks correct.

I loved mine. A little faster than the 185, a lot more roomy, easy to fly, very comfortable and solid, used twice the gas.

Yes that's what it appears to be Pete. They were popular here back then. Paul Shanahan flew them (https://www.abebooks.com/97809747722...0974772208/plp) and it's a worthy read. More on the bird: https://www.wy2.org/flightline/cessnat50.php I suppose it's handy to take your firewood with you when exploring?

Lycoming R-680-13 300 hp. One of Peterson's T-50s is in Sanford Maine on wheels. I put mine on floats using the 337 and flight manual from Northern Consolidated.

You wouldn't know it now, but Brooks Camp was originally established for sport fishing at the falls and there were few bears in the area. An excellent book on the Bristol Bay fishing lodge industry is "Rod & Wings, A History of the Fishing Lodge Business in Bristol Bay, Alaska" by Bo Bennett. In it is information about the Cessna T-50 on floats used by Northern Consolidated (pages 193-197). Ray Peterson of Northern Consolidated operated 7 T-50's on EDO 6470's (he bought 10 sets for $1000 ea.) using 300 hp Lycoming engines. Good read.

Bo Bennett will get you a signed copy if you can find him through Kulik Lodge

I saw him today at lunch at Brooks. He was Kulik Lodge manager through the 90’s until Kendall/Jackson wineries hired him to head their corporate flight dept for a while. Bo is an individual! What a showman. And I mean in the lodge after dinner.

Rods and Wings is readable cover to cover.

Heckuva a guy and loves to fly. was a Maule and Cub driver flying Kodiak way back when.

Am glad to have him as a friend, compatriot, etc. Always a greeting of “…hello Captain Dave…”.

Brooks rained all day tday. I was soaked thru all day. warming up now. d

I remember that phone call. Was at my folks on my way to Oshkosh sitting on their front porch. Glad you got the Feds straightened out.

Hmmmm, would this be the former Canadian Bo Bennett, who was once an Olympic gymnast? If so, haven’t heard of or from him in a long time. Glad to hear he’s well……he is a class character, and a heck of a pilot.

Dave was a huge help for which we will be forever grateful. And don’t let him kid you. He graciously offered to help and brought his dry suit on each daily trip to the Falls. When the wind finally let up one week later on Friday morning, he was in the water first thing in the morning and getting the plane rigged for righting.

This community is fantastic but I have a feeling that Dave would have helped anyone. Just the kind of guy he is.

    Thanks again, Dave!
