Missouri Breaks (Winifred) 2022 June 24-25-26

This first notification is just to hold the place on your calendar.

We will once again celebrate backcountry flying, the Missouri Breaks, and a small friendly cow-town in Central Montana where there are only friends, close knit community, and sometimes horses in the bar.

It will be a busy weekend in Winifred with the youngest of one of the oldest and most important families in town getting married... but Frank Carr says, bring-em and we'll feed-em. So weekend after Johnson Creek, we will see you all in Winifred. Questions?? 406 350 5487 Ralph Rogers

Robert, you can come in any conveyance you like, with or without ice cream. That said, we might have to make an emergency flight to LWT if you show up without the makings……

    Hope to see you there!

Cotton, bring me another one and keep your fingers out of it.

From Genesis: "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be
found in all corners of the earth."

Then he made the earth round... and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

The Montana Pilots Association will be helping Ralph with the Missouri Breaks Fly In again this year. One function of this Fly In has always been a Fly In Breakfast at nearby Lewistown on Saturday morning. As was the case last year, the Central Montana Hangar of Montana Pilots Association will be hosting the breakfast Fly In at Lewistown on Saturday June 25th, from 7 AM till Noon. They will be serving their specialty: Cinnamon Roll Pancakes. Trust me, these are a culinary delight!

So, join us for the Missouri Breaks Fly In, and ALL the associated events, if you can, but join us for one or more of the events of this fun weekend.

If you need more information on the Lewistown Fly In Breakfast, contact Jeff Martinez 406-707-0598 or email at: jmart2580@gmail.com
    See you there!

Thanks Mike: And thanks MPA. There are some big changes in Winifred this year, with more to come via Norman Asbjornson...the airport is one of the biggest. Yes, the heart of this little "true western" town will not change...the horses will still be found occasionally in the bar. See you in Winifred. R

Come on, Eric. There is plenty of room for both pavement and turf if, in fact, they are going with pavement. I have no knowledge either way……

I've met Norman a few times at events here in Tulsa where his company headquarters and major manufacturing facilities are. Super nice, super smart and super approachable, well unless you're wearing a Super Cub jacket and then he approaches you!

Wonderful what a successful individual is doing for his home town.

Eric: If you can't land on the 4000' X 100' of turf which will remain after paving, we would like for you to land in Lewistown and we'll pick you up. !!!

New guy (and new-ish pilot) here but I won't be able to make the Breaks Fly-In because I'm scheduled to go to a wedding on 6/25. Okay to show up at the airport on Thursday afternoon/evening, camp, and have my own, one-person fly-in during which I just enjoy the MO breaks from the air?

NOTAM on the gas pump in Winifred. We have gas, have the pump running, but the credit card reader is crap. This has happened before, but only right before the flyin. We can use cash, check, or send you downtown to the ATM where your card will work. Sorry !! Don't let this scare you off, if necessary we can use the "honor" system where you can record your gas and pay on departure. More later as I nose around town.... The 50 million $ school project is spectacular, we will arrange tours.

I'm back in Montana and it is green.... All the way up the rockies it was brown brittle and red-flag. Later....R

In the category of "Small World"...

This morning we were harvesting oocytes for a young, great ranch couple from Montana, and I knew they lived close to Lewistown which is, of course, just south and west of Winifred, the epicenter of the Universe. I asked them where exactly they lived and they told me "Denton MT", so I took a look at Google maps and saw that Denton MT has what appears to be a very nice airstrip about 1 block from Main Street! I looked closer and sure enough there is the Shade Tree Cafe in downtown Denton! Perfect place to go for breakfast, etc! I went in to begin the procedure and walked over to hold her hand and said "Kiddo, you have been holdin' out on me! Your town has an airport!" She laughed and said "Well it isn't much of an airport, just a bunch of mowed grass" to which I said "Perfect! And a cafe only a block away from the airstrip! We'll be there sometime for breakfast!"

I texted Ralph and sure enough he is quite aware of that town and airstrip, and he knows of the people who live there, too...those small Montana schools are quite "in the know" about each other, and Denton is only 27 nm away from one another! It brought joy to my heart not only to be able to provide care for these young people, but also to have a friend and connection like Ralph in common! Bonus...I had the chance to call Ralph, wish him a good early morning (whoops... forgot about the time change, my bad, Ralph)!

Ralph, I am so fortunate to have crossed paths with you! It has been such a calming thing for these people from your communities, who don't really have a trust of "big city" docs, to know that I know of you and Melissa and that connection puts everyone at ease. Yes that's where the prairie fire burned much of town a year ago, Shade Tree survived, Tessy and I have eaten there. Just down the road is a natural spring which I wanted to land at with plane and cool off sometime. I see its permanently closed. Another destination falls victim to technology. What kid wants to swim there with their parents when you have a smart phone at your fingertips. We should fly as a group to the old Shade Tree for some chow. https://centralmontana.com/blog/swim...-warm-springs/

    Randy,

It is a small world. While that Minnesota Santa we all know was delivering presents to kids in Minnesota last winter, another Santa type was delivering a load of toys to the children of Denton. We landed at Stanford, cause the strip at Denton was not plowed, and the 310 would likely still be there. The Denton kids were bused over, and was a lot of fun. That fire burned a number of buildings in Denton.

Below from Denton, November 30 2021. That time of year we should be shoveling snow...not putting out fires traveling on 70 mph winds. It has been a terrifying fire year for me. It would be great to go to Denton, that is, however a very small cafe. We can plan and work something out. See Photo.Click image for larger version.

Thanks to Mike Vivion for the Poster. Also, we can all repeatedly thank the Montana Pilots Assn for Friday's dinner....some of Frank Carr's ("Master of the Pit") smoking-best work. Pie man (see Galen Hanselman's review of Winifred) is doing his best to provide as well. I have reposted from last year below for first time attendees....and I reran the little poem about the new bathroom- it simply didn't get enough recognition. Norman Asbjornson will be here again and hopefully we can get him to let us into the school were we are seeing what a generous man can do to help his small home community with a massive infusion of money for education.

    Below is rerun:
    For First Time Attendees

Winifred is a town of about 150 august folks. After 100 plus years of stasis, Winifred is rapidly changing as we speak. A fellow pilot, and good friend of many of the attendees to this flyin, has donated 40 million dollars to refurbish/build on to the school. His instructions were simple..." Build in Winifred, the best school in Montana", and we are. My little house was one of the victims of the expansion, Melissa who taught there for 38 years, would have had it no other way. Construction has started...come see what one super-generous (and highly successful) individual can do for the place where he was born and raised. This story is sort of what Winifred is all about... it is a place where time has not spoiled the folks who are hardworking, honest, generous, and make a living working off the land. We also have one great cafe, one filling station, two churches and several bars. If it sounds too good to be true, just know I have had trouble believing it myself for the 45 years I have lived here. It is the way the world used to be, and we wish it still was.

Schedule of events to follow...but fairly standard.

Airstrips: 9S7 (Winifred Strip) is turf in good condition about 150' X 4000' running basically 10º - 28º. The strip rises uphill from the east to a smooth rise about 1000' from the west end where it becomes level. There is an embankment on the east end where there are frequently downdrafts in strong west wends. If wind conditions allow, land planes east to west. Down hill landings aren't bad...just a little longer than you are used to. Use 122.9 as the CTAF.

    Breaks strips:
All 6 strips run generally E - W and are between 1200 - 3000'. The shortest is Woodhawk at ca. 1200' with some trees on each end. The longest is a private strip called Heller Bottom which is the only strip right on the Missouri River in the Breaks. While private, we are welcomed at Heller by Loren Smith the owner. Loren has also installed some picnic tables and a small one-roomed KOA type cabin (first come first served). Use 122.9 to announce in the backcountry and, while we consider these strips relative easy for backcountry fliers, we lost a C185 and Carbon Cub just this last year (no injuries). It is backcountry....always have your "A" game on and look to avoid surprises.

    For repeat visitors:

After years of whining, completely without restraints,
Lou, someone of influence has heard your complaints,

Norm's giving did not end with the school,
he has provided pilots a place of elegance for the stool,

There is an all tile shower, and heat on demand,
A mirror, and towels, and comfy places to stand,

It was Lou's concept but Norm's chore to do,
Say thanks to these two while you shower or poo.

If anyone headed to JC or winifred from the east needs a place to overnight in NW South Dakota, feel free to camp at my place SD33 on the sectional, 5 miles south of Camp Crook, right along the Little Missouri River. Hangar space available if needed.

Roger and Mike; thanks to you and all that help with your backcountry volunteer work. Roger, Marcia/I are on our airplane/RV tour in the NW and will be in WA checking out rivers and San Juan islands. We're planning on stopping at Winifred mid July on our way back to CO; we'll keep you posted and hope to see you than since we missed you in AZ. OBTW, left Husky at home and bringing our new 56 182.

Quick PIREP: We finally got some rain so things are looking green....not Montana-in-the-spring green yet, but getting closer. More rain due in the next few days. Gas Pump is fixed but I will leave the NOTAM up a few more days just in case. We have two "Yoopers" camping in the hangar for the next couple of days while it snows in Johnson Creek and gets that out of its system. It must be flyin season and I look forward to seeing you all. Call with any questions... I'll be headed to JC on Wednesday, WX permitting. Ralph

Hope to not jinx things but if the five-day weather outlook is to be believed, it certainly looks like this weekend will be lovely in central Montana.

    A few questions from a first-time attendee:

    • I presume it takes a day or two of sun and warm for the gumbo mud to dry out? So if the rain stops today, Winifred field and MO Breaks strips should be dry by Friday morning? (Likely no BC landings from me; just some low passes.)
    • I've seen elsewhere that hangar space is available on first-come, first-served basis. Will the hangar be available on Thursday night, too, or should I bring some earth anchors to tie down outside?
    • Fuel is available and card reader is working, or just the former? Either way about the card reader, it sounds like I can buy fuel in Winifred, given what I've read above and that the NOTAM expires on 6/22. What's your fuel rate these days?
    • Best place to set up a tent is just tucked away somewhere on the field (not the runway of course...)
