    Starter Replacement

Got a Lyc 0-290 and need to replace the starter. Do I go SkyTec or B&C? What’s the conventional wisdom out there?

    thanks folks,

Skytec. Then make sure you have a ground strap from engine to airframe.

I like B&C probably because I always use them and had good success. Recently I was having an issue that turned out to be a bad left mag but called B&C for some input on the starter/ring gear fitment and they spent quite a while on the phone with me. Took pictures from me and made recommendations. Point is, great customer service which means a lot to me.

I run two B&Cs and one Skytek. Next one will be B&C. The Skytek was off the aircraft twice in the first 100 hours. B&Cs have 300 trouble-free hours each, with two starts per tach hour.

But my experience is small Continental, and the next one is a 180 Lyc with original Prestolite. So, is Skytek better for the larger Lycs?

And I've had nothing but goods experience with SkyTecs.

Due to the fitment/modification of a front mounted oil cooler, I went with the Hartzell ERZ-8011 and it was a plug and play, that has been faultless for 6 years now!

I’d second the notion that SkyTec’s quality and customer service is slipping. A Customer’s SkyTec mounting pad broke clean through. Clearly a casting flaw. SkyTec (Hartzell) wouldn’t warranty it nor even return a phone call. Crickets. I’m done with those guys. B&C, on the other hand, has some of the best customer service around. There’s a clear choice for me.

No parts for Skytec. The one way bearing went out in my 149NL. Hartzell would not repair it. Wanted me to buy another one and send the "core" back in or pay a $200 core charge.

Figures. Another decent company pillaged by a bunch of bean counters. I feel bad for the honest folks that will undoubtedly suffer the consequences when SkyTec becomes the white elephant of aircraft starters (and alternators as well). Too bad. I liked their stuff for years

I use to be able to fly to SkyTec. They were on the Grandbury airport and would disassemble and repair a starter while I was there and show me what failed and how they had improved my earlier version. They also made the Plane Power alternators. They sold those two lines and now make the SureFly electronic ignition.

This... I took NDRII's suggestion on this last year and have been very happy with it. I actually have a spare one on the shelf if someone needs it...
