People tend to buy one or the other and have no experience with the one they DIDN'T buy.

All I can say is that I like my Firmin.

Same here. No experience with the Airglas but I love my Firmin. Well made, lightweight, and holds a bunch. It is one of the top mods I have done to my certified -18 and I have nearly 40 mods on it. And it was an absolute pleasure to deal with Bob.

The older airglas were much smaller than the firman. And with how the hinge was attached on the airglas sucked. It didn’t swing all the way down before hitting.
Love my firman. Hardly ever use it but it’s nice when you need it. Welded tabs on my fuselage when I rebuilt.

Is one heavier than the other, or does one hold more volume/weight than the other?

Britishcubbloke, I have the LC18XL. its 21.5 Lbs installed, has a Max baggage weight of 175Lbs. Don't have the dimensions handy, though I have heard the Firmin is a little bigger. I agree with NanavutPA-12, which ever one has is probably a fan. However I will say I am impartial to the whole thing. For me when I decided it was time to get a pod and started looking for one the LC18XL was immediately available. This may not be the case today. For me at the time, it was what was available, easy and no hassle. I bought it and it was installed a couple days later. I guess what I'm saying is, what is the cost/wait time for either? I don't think you can go wrong with either one, just get one. I would never not have a pod. Definitely don't buy one of the older, smaller pods.

Bob also sells an extra large bush pod/Firmin pod that isn’t STC’d. About 2 inches deeper and a larger door. Has anyone obtained a field approval for this one to get it legal on a certified cub?
Have owned same cub for 38 years!!!

This is the big pod. On 35s and ext gear you’ll struggle to tell the difference between it and the smaller unless you had another cub parked next to it……or if Denny was the one doing tech inspections and ramp checks

Are you doing the standard pod or the larger? His fiberglass pod or carbon?

Standard a lot bigger than the Airglass pod that has served me really well.

How much does the Firmin pod weight compared to the Airglass carbon fiber pod?

I see this thread is still up. In the interest of "how big are they" I took some measurements from my LC18XL pod. I do not see the door dimensions listed on Airglas' website so I used a tape measure to get those numbers.
    LC18XL
    86" long
    24" wide
    13" deep
side door is 33.5" long, 9.75"(front) tapering to 8"(backside)
rear door 11.25 wide, 9.5 high
    weight installed 21.5LBS
    max load capability 175LBS

From Airframes AK website on the Firmin AK bush pod:
    Firmin Alaska Bush Pod
    84" long
    24" wide
    14" deep
side door is 29" long, 10" high
rear door is 14" wide, 8" high
    weight installed 25LBS
    max weight capacity 150LBS

For the good of the group, can anyone provide the dimensions of the EXP (bigger) AK bush pod?

Anyone ever get the XL Firmin/Airframes Alaska measurements? I’m particularly interested in door heights to accommodate a Honda 1000 generator.

On its side, my Yamaha 1000 watt generator fits through the side door of my Firmin pod without a problem but it must remain on its side while flying.

Anyone make one for the J-3? Yes I already understand the gross weight limits, not the point.

Just measured one here in the shop. The door is 27" long, 12.5" tall in the front and 10.5" tall in the rear.

Can anyone tell us anything about the open top pod that simply buckles onto the plane???? FedX pilot Isaac Landecker, has Cub with Pstol flaps parked at Merrill Field with a pod riged up that way??? Takes it off in 1 min flat.
Pulls his gear around in it as a toboggan, then simply pops it back onto plane in few mins and takes off??? Can't find out anything about it. But would like to buy one!

I don't know what it is but was in hopes one of the experts on here knew about it???? Can't believe it's the only ONE in Alaska. What a hell of an option on a Cub, dream pod for trapping or ice fishing...... It's so easy to just pop it off, he regularly will drop it off to reset a couple of conibears, instead of snowshoeing back and forth. Looks like it pulls almost effortly with 50 lbs in it in 18" of snow. That kid is darn good little trapper with only two seasons of experience????
