1949 PA-14 Build Progress Pictures

Finished up the rebuild of the 1966 PA18 and now been onto the 49' PA-14. The 14 came out of southern Idaho. 1200 hours TT on aircraft. Mid time narrow deck 0320. Frame was in good shape overall, few minor issues. We replaced both spars on one wing as it had been spliced many moons ago. Other wing was in good shape, minus a few ribs needing replacement. New leading edges for both wings. We are waiting on leading edge for second wing from Dakota Cub. They have been super backed up lately, as is expected with covid. Basic panel, carbon fibers floors. Picked up a 41' J3 with a c85 couple months back to fly 'cheaper" and get some hours built up. Cheers! - Taylorman

Good afternoon, Taylorman,

I've always been very fond of the PA-14s. A close friend of my Dad's had s/n 14-41 on EDO 2000s. My Dad loved it, and had he not had his Super Cub, he would have bought the PA-14.

What did you use to prime and paint your fuselage? It looks great!

Great looking project! I'm strongly considering building a pa-14 replica using Wag Aero 2+2 plans, and have a question for you: How wide is that thing across the cabin at the front door post? The 2+2 plans show 39.5" across the front door posts (they added a left-side door), center-to-center on the tubes. I'd always assumed they simply copied the pa-14, but I don't have one to measure so I'm not sure. I did order every pa-14 drawing that Cub Club has, but haven't received them yet.

rck, this was white aerothane and then black aerothane epoxy. Dad has used this process before with very good luck.

Dad measured last night. 38.5 inches, so one inch narrower than the 2+2. Let me know if you need any other measurements and I can get them pretty quickly for you.

Thanks very much for your reply. That 39.5" was center-to-center on the tubes at the front of the door, so if he measured inside-to-inside, then it would be very close to identical to the 2+2 plans. I'd guess that, but having never measured a pa-14 before, I can't say.

It will be most interesting to review the pa-14 plans from Cub Club when they arrive.

Some Updated photos of the PA14 progress. Fabric is on and we are through a few coats of Randoproof. Clear goes on next, some sanding, silver and then color. Will try to keep updated with photos. First photo is when dad started to get the fabric ironed on. Had about an hour left of here and there to get everything nice and tight. Tapes seemed to turn out nice throughout. Overall very happy with how it's coming along.

What a nice looking rebuild!! Always been intrigued with the PA-14. Have a friend that owns one that he keeps telling me that I should buy from him since he's going to quit flying. But then he has been telling me that for several years.

I recall following a post on a -14 rebuild a few years ago that put an O-360 in it. Was it this plane? Memory fails me.

This 14 has a 0-375 . We did a cub last winter with javeron wings and 360 .doing a north star cub this winter using 360. Doing a javeron kit next winter . All will have oratec fabric. That will be are 7 th build job using oratec.are first 12 we did with dakkota airframe last one he made
