I have searched the site and can't find what the torque values should be for the three bolts/nuts (per side) for the landing gear. Can someone provide that information. I have changed the bungees and ready to reinstall.
One of the owner performed tasks in the FX-3 build is to fit the landing gear attach bolts and torque them to spec. I questioned what seemed to be a ridiculously high torque and was told that's the way you have to do it.
I brought this up with the DAR at airworthiness cert and he agreed that the torque used was inappropriate for bolts that are acting as hinges with only shear loading. Sometimes a torque wrench can be a dangerous tool in the wrong hands or with inappropriate torque specs.
Crank it till things bend or break, back off half turn8)
Lots of guys in the bike and sled world think torque is all you need to keep things together... I find that a touch of blue loctight with the torque makes up for lots of vibration.
Sucks to have a bolt vibrate out 1/2 way through a race in which you are gaining ground on the leader fast.
My favorite mechanic in the big truck world said the proper torque is always a quarter turn before it snaps! It just takes a lot of practice to acquire the feel.
One place I tend to be careful and use a torque wrench is anytime I am going into cast or machined part with a bolt. Having to pull a head off because you striped out threads really sucks! DENNY
