Super Cyclone

Thanks Web, I looked there after I made the post and found what I needed.
I put a digital level on the top of the door frame for horizontal axis and it matched the firewall for perpendicular. The seat rails do not, so I am going with top of door and firewall and the panel has about 5 degrees of tip.
Thanks everyone and fly safe and often!

40347206-A7B9-4D6B-A7A7-7CB0D4EBC9B6.jpgWe have been working on the old Cyclone between feeding and plowing snow. Riveted up the last two side skins, got a panel cut and everything mounted in said panel, built shelves to help hold avionics behind the panel and wired everything on the panel with a lot of help from Web and Dynon support. Dismantled the panel and painted all the pieces, installed nut plates and riveted the shelves together.
To get the panel sub structure out of the fuselage to work on, I had to remove the top of the dash, while it was out I made a defrost vent and installed and cut a strip to go underneath the dash to install nut plates to so I can screw in the windshield retainer strip.
Used a v brace that I had for the 180H to fab a jig and built a v brace for the build.
Oh and I swept some of the floor the the other day. If I had a melter I could melt down the aluminum shavings and have some sheet aluminum.

I'm pretty sure the early 180's, up through at least 55,
were polished with exterior trim paint only.
IPC shows only trim colors through 1957.

The first white is shown for 1958: "alpine white"
CES 1054-195 or -187

1959: "snow crest white"
CES 1054-235

Thanks Hotrod, that will give me somewhere to start.

Does anyone know if the Cessna 180/185 engine mount was set up for zero thrust line?

Thanks Brian

Talked to renowned engine truss builder and he said the engine in 185 points down, something to do with airflow over the horizontal stab. Going with a mostly factory engine truss so thrustline pre engineered for me.
Mounted a fresh air vent and static port and riveted sub panel and boot cowl on. Set windshield up on dash and the line of rivets that I thought held in the windshield is just a line of rivets. So the strip I made to screw the windshield retainer in is useless. Will make another because I still want to use screws and nut plates to hold in the windshield.
One thing that was new to me was where there are several layers of skins , there are some that are flush riveted before the next skin is put on. A great idea to keep them from getting gaps between the layers. Don’t know if this a Cessna approach or something the guys ahead of me tried. I like it and will use the idea in other places.
Somebody posted 800-1000 hours to build a cub. I am at 1200 hrs in wings and not sure on fuselage. A cyclone is definitely a long haul for build time. Still having fun, and dream of pushing the throttle to the firewall and making a three blade MAC scream every day. That’s what keeps me going.

Don't forget to fit a seaplane V brace behind the windshield, even if you never plan on going on floats. It stiffens the forward upper fuselage when taxing over rough ground. And helps to keep the windshield from developing leaks.

Ran into roadblocks fixing exhaust on the cub so slid over and built a door for the oil fill tube. Will be flush mounted into fiberglass cowl and hidden hinge. Going to make another for the dipstick. Oh ya have the engine on and the prop on for cowling fit and measuring of cables for prop and mixture.
Waiting on hartwell latch to finish door.

Thanks Mike!
Really busy with non airplane stuff, unfortunately. However did get the oil fill door riveted together and into the upper cowl. Hope to get the oil check door in tomorrow. Flew to a friends over the weekend to look under the cowl of his 185 to see where the throttle and mixture come through the firewall and how the intake was built. Plenty of building yet to do.

Maybe you already know this, but there is a nice Cyclone on amphibs at Dawson Creek (CYDQ) in Canada. The guy that owns/flies it was really nice when I passed through there and needed help finding and getting to a hotel.

Decided on a K N reusable air filter and tried my hand a fiberglass. Only took four times to get the filter housing right.

Is that the engine air filter?
I'm certainly no expert, but that round spigot doesn't look big enough to flow the air required by a big 6 banger.

Hey hotrod,
The air filter is 4x9 and the round spigot is 3”. The intake tube for the throttle body is 3” and I am about 7” from the filter to the throttle body itself. The 185 that I looked at had a very similar set up where the intake necked down to the throttle body, the filter is in a different place, but the mechanics are quite similar.
Thanks for looking and I am always listening and learning, Brian

Been quite a while since any updates. Been busy with airplane and other things. Finally got both doors hung and latches built so I will post some pictures of that

Put fairings on where the flaps come up against the fuselage. The kit ones would not fit at all. It took me all summer looking at them to finally get the fiberglass out and lay them up and I think they turned out pretty good.
