Photo dump with some progress. Both wings are ready for cover with all new perimeter, new ailerons, and new pulleys from Dakota cub. Useless trivia...an uncovered wing/aileron assembly with no fuel tank is 62.5#. I'll try to get a number after cover and paint.

We checked them on the fuselage one more time to make sure they still fit. Everything looks good.

    Polyurethane on the floor boards.

Now on to covering. Spent a bunch on covering stuff and even found some MEK in Colorado. Time to start wrapping!

I picked up some parking brake valves because I think I'd use those. Hope to get the wings wrapped up in the next month. Heading to PHx this week to pick up a stab and set of elevators. Halfway hunting for gear legs if anyone knows of a set.

If you decide to go with used there are several pairs here. Some with hydrasorbs and some without. PM me if you want more info.

I've been NORDO for a while but this is moving forward. Both wings are covered as well as the tail feathers and gear legs. I ended up getting new legs from Univair.

The fuselage has the super cub trim system installed and the super cub front seat belts, both using FA Dodge STC's. It is also primed with EP420. Covering will happen in the next week or so. Chasing down a few things I need to install before gets covered.

I also need a cabane and shock struts. Anyone have a line on those? I was thinking standard bungees. Is there any reason I want or don't want hydrasorbs?

I'll post some pics when I get a minute to dig through them.

Is the PA-11 fuel tank the same as the LH tank from a PA-18?

Dakota cub advertises a tank that fits both, but the filler neck may not be located in the same place.

The filler neck on original PA11 and PA16 tanks were not in the middle like the later PA18, 20 and 22.

So the 18 tank will fit the 11 wing, but will require a different cover?

I remember bolting one right onto a PA11. Don't expect to have a seat built at Javron and bring it to me for an annual on a certified PA11. Glenn can sign it off

Not in mine? Was built in April of 47, maybe later ones. We took a Smith cub seat and had to build new legs

Seems a bit dramatic for something that is STC'd. I'll give Atlee and call and see if they still support it.

It's been almost 20 years ago we did this. We rebuilt the seat legs, but now I'm thinking we did that to make the seat the same height as the original 11 seat because the 18 one was too high?

My PA-11 factory seat was too low for extended flight. Like sitting in a bucket with knees raised above hips. I added a 4" flotation cushion for float flying. A PA-18 seat would have been more comfortable despite the spar carry through ahead.

My 11 had a PA-18 seat installed. I'm 5' 8", and the height of that seat put my head up close to the spar carry through. Still a lot more comfortable than the original front seat in 11s.

If I were doing a fairly serious rebuild on an 11, I'd consider converting to the PA 18 top deck, and 18 spars. Gets that headache rack out of the way. But, not a small project.

It's unfortunate that some enterprising DER or equivalent hasn't analyzed the PA-11 and designed a 100# GW upgrade. More robust gear hardware, wing or strut mods, and fuselage ads as required.

Piper Aircraft did that back in 1949 when it came up with the PA-18-95 at 1500 pounds gross weight. The PA-11 was an honest effort to extend the life of the venerable J-3.

I fit the old boot cowl on last week to see if it would be a good pattern to make a new one. It is pretty darn close, so I'll use it to make another one this week. I got a firewall flange from Clyde so I'll make the boot cowl removable for future MX needs.

Since I was fitting the boot cowl, I figured I should fit the cowl as well.

Since the firewall was in place, I thought it might be wise to install the engine. I am having heck of a time sorting out the exhaust. I have a C85-12F, so the original exhaust fits, but makes it a nightmare to remove the oil screen. I've heard through the grapevine that a PA-18-95 exhaust is the answer, but those are like hens teeth. I spoke to Mr Pierce today, and he gave me some ideas so I think I have a plan. I'm going to install the original exhaust and do some brainstorming and hopefully have it sorted out next week.

some shim the exhaust, double gaskets, along with a small dent in the muffler.

I think this thread is about up to date. Sorry I was 5 months behind...

I'm still trying to find a front seat. I have some drawings so I may just make one. Glass is ordered from LP, probably 4-5 weeks out. I'll probably make a boot cowl and fit all the wing root fairings in the next couple weeks. I have goofy ideas of flying this thing in the next couple of months.

I need instruments too, anyone have some?
