Heading home from Raquette I was able to slip in quietly from the north. The six and twelve pounders remained silent,
I think they were having tea. I'll bet Ethan would have given his eyeteeth for a Cub.Fort Ti.jpgFort Ticonderoga

Today I thought I'de come in to the Fort from the south but was met with flak in the way of a VT Guard Blackhawk on the RNAV to Ticonderoga. Fort Ti south.jpg So with the spirit of Ethan Allen as my wingman he who happens to be the supreme commander of Vermonts National Guard the "Green Mountain Boys" I was left alone to harass at will. I stayed low photographing the ice road from Shoreham VT to Ticonderoga NY. To the right is the Vermont landing for oldest continuously operated cable ferry in the US. Cable Ferry.jpg

Eathan was a relative on my father’s side. Vermont natives for a few hundred years.

Jim

Not to wander off, I always like the term "Vermont Native". Farmers local to us, I was pleased how well we were treated by them after moving here in the mid 90s, The elder stated they are not native, just that they came up the river 300 years earlier where as we came up the highway.

7” of solid ice on the CT river, at least near 2B9…

My float pond is the northern most body of water on the Susquehanna making it the headwater of the Chesapeake Bay.
Gary posted that Wiki link on Otsego lake.
Part of the history

Early in 1779, General James Clinton and his soldiers began to haul 208 boats and all their supplies from the present day Villages of Fort Plain and Canajoharie, along the Mohawk River, towards Otsego Lake. By the end of June, they had made it to the lake and began to build a temporary dam at the outlet to raise the water level. The purpose of this was to break the dam and ride the flood water down the river to meet General John Sullivan at Tioga. This event is described by James Fenimore Cooper in the introduction to his popular novel The Pioneers, and commemorated by a Memorial Day canoe race.[36][37][38]

The Fort Plain contingent followed the old Corduroy Road South, my runway parallels it only 200' West of it. George Washington also made the same trip in 1783.

Any boulder patches in that big lake? Lake Trout (and Walleyes) like them to hang around then spawn in the Fall (Walleyes in Spring). I see there's a fish hatchery available so maybe they take care of that for them.

Edit: https://suny.oneonta.edu/biological-field-station/otsego-lake answered my question. Mostly silt and clays with cobble and occasional boulder patches in figure 12 physical limnology section.

24 inches of snow on Long Island. No winter fun. My airport closed. The only real grass field left is closed, even if you’re on skis. Ridiculous. It’s becoming less GA friendly here every year. I guess it’s good I’m old.

I would hate to be living out there with the continuing shutdowns. I think back when the Bridgehampton race track was being shut down, Once the locals realized just what a golf course means to your ground water when you live on a sandbar.

I spent many happy days watching races at Bridgehampton.
I learned to fly at Edwards Airport which is now Bayport Aerodrome (23N) in 1967. In the mid seventies George Edwards sold the 47 acres to a housing developer. The planets lined up and a group of us managed to get the municipality’s support to buy the land. Supported by the neighbors who decided they would rather have a sleepy grass field in their midst rather than 150 houses and a sewage plant.

Fast forward to today where I’ve just learned that Lufker field in East Moriches is for sale for $7 million because the municipality closed them down because the new neighborhood doesn’t like the noise. The adjacent airport, Spadaro fell to the same fate a couple of years ago.

Additionally because of noise complaints from rich hamptonites over the years, the Town of East Hampton stopped taking federal money years ago and will be shutting KHTO this February and say they will reopen as a private airport with Prior Permission Required. No one believes it will reopen. It’s several hundred acres in the Hamptons. Worth a fortune. Just like the race track was.

My ancestors were farming and fishing on Long Island a hundred years before the Revolution. If you listen closely you can hear them spinning in their graves. Sorry for the rant. Just feeling sorry for myself when I see you guys having all the fun. :)
