I know its the end of the season but I am curious if anyone has suggestions on what skis to look at for my Maule? I have a line on a pair of Aero Ski M2000 straight skis and a set of Trick Air Alpine 3000. I would be flying out of Watertown, NY so while there is a decent amount of snow, they plow the runways so I would have to get pretty creative getting from the hanger to somewhere to take off. The airfield guys said they can leave snow in front of my hanger though to help with that. With the snow in the Adirondacks that you guys have been flying in, do you see a clear advantage of one over the other? I more or less just want to come land on some lakes and explore in the winter like I have been seeing in this thread.

Edited to add, if you would rather I not ask this in this thread, I'll post it elsewhere. Just wanted some local input if possible.

If you want an approved ski then what is out there for a wheel penatration ski besides Trick air?

Glenn

The only ones I am aware of are the Trick Airs, besides the Aero Ski R2800 mechanical retracts. Downside is you have to run small tires with those and I've heard their performance isn't great but that's just what I have heard.

Check in with that Outlaw Robbie Guhr, I'm sure he knows exactly what you should run, and what perhaps isn't technically allowed, should someone see you, deep in the Maine woods.:lol:

Definitely want to talk to Bob, NYG has a short video of Bob expertly extracting himself off Harris Lake in two feet of late season mush. From what I've seen Trick's on his Maule perform well in the conditions most likely encountered in the Adirondacks.

I have had TrickAirs for 7 seasons and they perform great. Never been stuck in deep or soft snow. I have a long taxis on pavement with no problems at all. Need 6:00/6 wheels.

I appreciate the info, Gents. Looks like I may be out here for a few years at least so probably worth it to get the plane on skis. Anyone have contact info for Robbie Guhr, or his username on here? And Jim, good to hear on the trick airs, your based out of Rochester? The Alpine 3000s for the Maule require 8.50s so that helps me out since that's what I am already running. Did you have to weld brackets on, and if so, who did it for you?

I installed the TrickAirs myself with welded brackets. This year a local guy put them on aChamp with welded brackets that were rigged and welded at BAC Services at Williamson Sodus Airport (KSDC) not too far from Watertown. They are the best shop I’ve found in my many years of flying. There is a set of TrickAir 3000 for sale on Barnstormers. You won’t be disappointed with them. Where you live they would get a lot of use. There is a good group of central and northern NY ski fliers to hang out with.

I spoke to NORCAL and I let him know that I’m happy with my Trick Air 3000’s on the M6. Hope to see see him during our NE Winter Fun 2023. I don’t know what this outlaw hearsay is all about :)

In between the snow storms over we finally had some nice weather yesterday. Took a friend from work and his daughter flying for her first flight, she is thinking she wants to be a pilot. Pretty day along the St. Lawrence.

Finally took my skis off this morning. 600-6 tires, amazing that it gets off the ground about 75' shorter without the added weight of the 31s

An interesting counterpoint to the idea that big tires give a shorter takeoff roll because of increased available angle of attack. May be interesting to evaluate under more tightly controlled test conditions.

I'm only 100HP, bigger engine and prop might be different
