PA-11 Assembly

I just bought a '47 PA-11 project. It was completely disassembled and the fuselage repaired and powder coated. Came with Atlee Dodge dual 18 gal fuel, baggage extension, gear extension and shoulder harness upgrades added. Everything else was in boxes and containers. Since I didn't disassemble it, I'm having a little trouble finding an assembly reference with specific information. Engineered drawings are illegible, parts manuals lack specific information for components. Can anyone recommend a good assembly reference?

I would start with these manuals and drawing sources. They are all helpful. Go to fly ins and look at other J3s, PA11s and Super Cubs. Read this forum, search it, ask questions on it with pictures and become a participating and paying member. It is a give and take. Where do you live? That helps because there might be someone right around the corner with a PA11 or the knowledge of the airplane.

What Steve said. Spend a lot of time with the parts manual. That's really all we had when we did ours. That and the Cub Club fliers and great advice from SC.org people. I have a ton of pictures of the rebuild I can DB for you. We had ZERO experience and somehow pulled it off.

It's kind of like building a big model airplane. Make sure you consult with cgnesin on this site as he's done two start to finish.

The -11 is a fantastic airplane.

Thanks you for the response Steve. I have looked into the manuals and can draw some good information from them. Incidentally, UNIVAIR has 2 parts manuals; one is only 27 pages and the other is a 51 page download with up to date part numbers for online ordering. I'm more accustom to military and manufacturer maintenance manuals and exploded illustrations. This will be an enjoyable challenge. Regarding fly-ins, I'm in Alaska and those are few and far between. I do have a stable of airplane guys whose knowledge I can draw from, as well as working at the local Aircraft Spruce store (employee discounts are worth the pain).

If you are in Alaska, we ARE one continuous fly-in. Lots of J3/PA-11 around ANC and the valley.

Could anyone till me the difference in the windshield for a J-3and a PA-11? I am building an experimental, I have a J-3 fuselage I am Copying and I am using PA-11 wings. I also have a J-3 windshield I am trying to decide if I should use the J-3 windshield or buy a new PA-11 windshield.
Thanks
Gary

The windshield has to go with the boot cowl that you use. The 11.cowl is a little lower and offers a little better visibility over the nose.

Hi All,
I am building a experimental PA-11. I started with what I thought was a J-3 basket case. It turns out that I have a bunch of miscellaneous parts, with no paper work, the fuselage is a J-3 in very good shape, it had been in a fixture and and repaired. Whoever repaired the fuselage did a good job but they striped everting off of it including gear fittings, wing fittings, pulley brackets, turtle deck, fairlead fittings. I borrowed a good fuselage that was in the flood of 1972 in Lock Haven it is rusted bad but is all there so I have been copying it, I also have a set of Wag Aero drawings. All and all the project is going well. Because I am going experimental I decided to power it with an O-320 150HP and I am adding the reinforcing details per the Wag Aero drawings for engines over 125HP. I have ordered PA-11 wings (no Flaps) from Javron and a super cub cowling and boot cow.
I do have have the fuselage about 90% complete new parts fit and welded in place, tail feathers remade/repaired and fit in place. The tail feathers are from a J-3, My question is will the J-3 tail feathers be adequate with the 150 HP engine?

Thanks for any thoughts and ideas
Gary

They do fly some of them with the smaller tail feathers. But not for me, I would want the SuperCub tailfeathers.

I am going to take Supercrow's advice and change to super cub tail feathers. Does anyone have a set of super cub tail fathers for sale? I would even be interested a damaged set I could use for a template and reverse engineer them. Buying new from Univair is a little out of the budget.
Thanks

Buy from Javron

I'm a long time Pa11 guy. No flaps and love to slip. I even have a set of flaps in storage but don't really want them on my 0200 Cub. But.... If I was building a 150hp Cub a would definitely be adding flaps.

This photo is a comparison of J-3 feathers (with added balance) from the Wag-Aero plans and SQ Cub stabilizer and elevator. I used these parts on my EAB 150 hp Super Cub without any difficulty, but I didn’t do any extreme flying. Super Cub parts would definitely be preferable, but the Modified J-3 parts were adequate.

Another detail to check would be the pivot point of the control stick. The Super Cub pivot point is lower in the torque tube than the J-3 giving more leverage to the pilot. I built my control system to the Wag-Aero plans and I never felt like the plane flew like a Super Cub.

J-3 measures 56 3/4”. Super Cub measures about 62”. That SQ looks like 64” or so. Don’t know about Tripacer.

Thanks Guys,
I haven't checked into the control stick yet, but I will.
I have found detailed drawings of PA-18 Stabilizer DWG # 12769 and Elevator DWG # 12770 on a website supercubproject.com/drawings/ On this site I have found drawings of J-3 Rudder DWG # 40622 and Fin DWG # 40592 I also found a Rudder PA-18 fabric assembly DWG # 42142 but no dimensional details.

Does anyone have detail drawings of PA-18 Rudder and Fin?
Thanks
Gary

I thought these part drawings are for a J-3 and I thought the J-3 has a smaller rudder than the Pa-18. I am thinking that with the 150 Hp I will want the bigger Pa-18 rudder.
But I am sure that the Pa-18 rudder is bigger but I thinks it is?
Thanks

The 40622 drawing says it's for a J-5C, but it is crossed out. The models on 40592 are also crossed out. You can't go wrong following these drawings except to use 4130 instead of 1025.

Thanks skywagon8a,
I have also talked to Jay from Javron and he assured me the 40622 & the 40592 will work well on my plane.
