BTW Iain that plane looks amazing after your rebuild of it! The 29's are a good look for a J3.

Thanks very much! I'm enjoying the 29" I think they look just right :p. Buy a ticket and come down south and fly it for a bit. That a brace of Ptarmigan I see in the bottom pic?

I'll have to do that. It's just going into the cold and miserable 3 months of the year up here now so beautiful warm south africa sounds nice. Yeah, it's a couple ptarmigan that I shot. I'm not much of a big game hunter but during bird season me and my copilot slay some grouse and ptarmigan.

There are worse places to be during the winter... All good fun!

Experimental maybe? If it's scratch built and has that many modifications I would assume it's EAB and the gross weight might be set higher.

for starters i only weigh 118 lbs....so a J-3 is pretty useful for me.
some of the modifications are...
upgrading wing and gear attach point to super cub specs
replacing some mild steel with 4130 in certain areas
heavy duty struts
aluminum spars
13 rib wings + a 1 inch extension on each wing
PA-11 frame upgrade
150 hp nose structure upgrade
scratch built seats with lots of adjustment.
removable front seat frame
modified elevator routing
2 inches wider rear seat
heavy duty tail wheel strcturture
twin 18's with left right both selector and a 2 gallon header
3 part boot cowl

paper gross is 1320 for LSA purposes.

vne 138mph
fast cruise on a cool day=90mph 6.5gph 2600rpm
economy cruise= 70mph 4.5gph 23000rpm
max endurance=60 mph 4 gph2100rpm
max climb rate=900fpm
climb at 1320 lbs=400fpm

Here are a couple good ones for the infamous Island Bobs this past summer.

Well I for one would like to know more about "the infamous Island Bob's" - it looks epic. Those 4 yellow floated Cubs in a row is like the pas-de-quatre in Swan Lake, but more appealing to my eyes. I have a set of EDO 1320 floats for my J-3, which was actually built as a floatplane and spent most of the last 60 years on floats in Canada, but half of the attach kit has vanished in storage and floatplanes are not in any event encouraged in South Africa.

Here's my modified 46 J3. Ive owned it a little over a year now and have put about 100 hours on it.
It's got an 0200, Dakota wings, 36 gallons, vg's, pa18 struts, a Mac 75/35, modified baggage area with removable rear seat, PA18 front seat, 29" Airstreaks, Scott 3200, no electrical, 3" extended Atlee gear, closed cowl. I'm having a great time driving around Alaska in it!

.... floatplanes are not in any event encouraged in South Africa.
Can you elaborate on this? Is it political or a lack of suitable water landing areas? Being able to land almost anywhere on the water is the ultimate freedom of the entire flying adventure.

floatplanes are not in any event encouraged in South Africa.[/QUOTE]

I'm not certain about politics nor about the landing space but one thing I remember about visiting South Africa is that there are very large, and very dangerous crocodiles in the rivers.
