    New Holstein 2021 Recap

A great group of folks attended the 2021 New Holstein Fly In, and as Steve Lewis would say, "We had a large time". We have so many people to thank!

Randy Corfman and his team who flawlessly executed 106 Young Eagle flights for a New Holstein record, as well as organized and managed the STOL demo and flour drop contests! These Young Eagle flights are ONE kid at a time so that means 106 flights! Thank you Randy for all you do!

Steve Lewis and Jeff Russell put together another great year of fly outs. The Klessig Farm flyout was graced with excellent weather (although it did not start out that way) and a great group of folks flying in.

Paul and Dana Osmanski, Ron Sitzman, Perry Welch, and a host of others provided a ton of infrastructure support.

We were blessed with largely good weather, and only high winds one night at one in the morning blowing stuff around.

One of the highlights of the week was flying to Kelly Country Creamery for ice cream. This involves landing in their 1000' alfalfa field. I think we went there four nights in a row!

At the one Laura and I flew out to, Dr. Randy put about 100 kids behind the stick of his airplane! It was like a summer Santa routine!

I was told it was smoke from forest fires to the north that provided the stunning sunrises that greeted us each morning.

Great times. Steve, I can't thank you and your website enough for the new friends, fellowship, fun, laughs, advise and help this group has given me. I will be forever in your debt. The icecream was the best you will ever taste in the middle of nowhere.

A huge thanks to SJ and Laura for hosting another fantastic event. I have been there most years since 2005 and it was one of the best. Thanks also to Doc Randy and his crew that coordinated a record Young Eagles event, a great STOL exhibit, and a fun flour drop event. One last thanks to the folks of New Holstein that warmly welcome us back year after year.

Here are a few pics from the Klessig farm Fly-out on Saturday. Thanks to Robert, Kathleen, Karl, and Liz Klessig for again welcoming us to their dairy farm. This was our fifth time there and it never gets old. They are absolutely some of the best folks you will ever come across.

Did anyone happen to get an aerial shot of the planes in the pasture at the Klessig farm fly out? Robert would like a copy if someone has one.

    Thank

These are awesome photos, thanks, Jeff.

With regard to launching pilots at the STOL exhibition...it was an honor and privilege to salute each and every one of these people. I have written before that there is something magical that happens in those cockpits when the Shooter salutes the aviator and gives them the OK to launch. Very magical. The view from the Shooter's perspective is worth a million bucks.

Many thanks to each of those who flew and to each and every one of the ground crew who helped set up the course and who served during the event to help keep it a safe and fun event. You people know who you are, and you know that this could not happen without you.

The photo of the Shooter launching the aircraft will be one that will be sitting in this old man's nursing home someday, and will bring a certain twinkle to his eyes.

    Thank you!

    Randy the Shooter

A Big Step for New Holstein

Many of you know the history of the Tecumseh factory in New Holstein, how they used to test lawn mowers at the airport, etc. Tecumseh closed many years ago and this is a pretty important next step for the community. Some of our members have visited the old site and even counseled the city on how to proceed.

Willy, when SJ asked me to organize the STOL exhibition many years ago I thought it might be a good thing to let the fella’s and gal’s know how much we appreciated them flying and participating in the event, so a salute was in order. I had a bunch of folks here send me links to Navy aircraft carriers videos and I studied them carefully. Julie and I went to San Diego several years ago and we visited the USS Midway and there was a statue of a “Shooter” and I thought what the heck…I could do this. He was using one finger pointing forward and, as Steve Eaton pointed out, I decided to apply some of what I learned from medicine to the shooter…and there you have it!

Why the salute? These folks get a huge charge out of that, and for crying out loud they deserve a salute for being willing to fly for us. The event has changed (not in a good direction, imho) from just us friends doing the event to having a number of pilots bringing over their highly modified aircraft to show how much we can modify our aircraft to perform STOL.

For me, I still wish for the following: 1. Everyone flies the same airplane. We get a nice, stock PA18 with VG’s, insure it out the wazoo. 2. Each pilot gets 30 minutes to fly that beast on the day before the event. 3. Each aviator gets a salute and 3 launches and 3 landings. 4. The aviator with the shortest takeoff and landing distances are proclaimed the winner. This would level the aviation field. I had lunch with Mike and Patty Sisemore a couple of days ago and I told him that having been the Shooter at NH for several years I know that there are a handful of aviators who consistently fly their aircraft at the event with distinction each and every time. There are others who choose not to participate who would do well if they chose to: You Know Who You Are who I would definitely put my grandkids into the back seat of an aircraft in an emergency to get them into or out of a backcountry airstrip. Those are the ones I would salute!

A few years ago a photographer from AOPA (who passed away recently) was standing behind me taking photos of the launches and landings. He remarked that he thought the Shooter pointed forward with one finger. I pointed out why I use two fingers and he had a major laughing attack.

I must admit that being the Shooter is one of my most enjoyable things in life.

Aviation is fun, enjoyable and I hope it stays that way!
