winters in Utah, Summers in Idaho
After enjoying my -12 for a little while, we found this….
lower right longeron at tail cluster. The rest of the airframe seems sound, and was taken to bare metal only 8 years ago and has been hangared in dry climes since.

anybody have a recommendation on where to take this for repair, and a rough estimate of what ill be out to get her up? I’m comfortable flying her to get fixed. She lives in McCall Idaho and ogden Utah, so that area would be ideal. Currently in McCall. 799E0AB0-77BC-4F36-AE10-B23003E93184.jpeg799E0AB0-77BC-4F36-AE10-B23003E93184.jpeg

I got a new tail section from Univair. If the cracked tube is like that, there may be more corrosion in the tail cluster. It’s where moisture has drained to for over 70 years on your -12. [emoji22]

This was my -12 tail cluster a few years ago. Notice the knife in the longeron and the tail post that was cracked almost the entire circumference.

Wendy, that’s what I’m worried about. Did the gremlins end up doing that repair? Roughly what did it cost you to get back in the air? Trying to figure out just how hosed I am here.

No, the trolls didn’t do the repair, thank goodness. It was a competent mechanic.
Univair has the short & long aft fuselage sections for $3,500-$5,500 respectively. I think the labor for mine was about $5K. I had to go with the long one, because my lower longerons weren’t straight. It only took a day to chop off the old & weld on the new, using plumb bobs & levels. Then 2 more months to recover, paint, & deal with personal issues (not mine). Cutting the back half of the plane off seems drastic, but remember that that half is less expensive than the front half.
